To add to your pleasure/pain, hook on to the shifter 'E' clips with wires, turn the lights out - and 'pull the pin'.
After the chop mods are made, and the springs/fig 8/ ... found - reinstall using hand pressure only, no vise, no safety wire: that way, the hard won title above will be secure!

On the serious side, the GT and chopped version are both 215mm total length. The available 'short shifter' dimensions ... ? I could have cut further, as perhaps Chuck did. Just pick a height that is comfortable if the original is still in the car - and cut ( after disassembly as above).
