Roadtrip. 1,600 miles in two days, golf, killing bugs at a high speed
Finally drove the 928 GTS as it was intended, mile after mile of Interstate. Just got back from Florida last night. I went down there on Thursday late afternoon and Friday morning. Each leg was 780 miles. I averaged 18.5mpg, running an average of 77 mph on Interstate 95 and 64. Time en route was 10.5 hours each way.
Man, this car just eats up the miles. The Valentine One kept me informed in NC, SC, GA and FL. Ran mile after mile in the low to mid 90's, high 80's. I did get to 100 for one short stretch, but didn't want to temp the gods. I didn't have a lot of bail money with me.
The only time I was really concerned was when a Hummer H2 stayed about 40 yards behind me in Georgia when I was running at 94mph. This guy had big dubs (20 inchers) on it and was as aerodynamic as a large brick. He couldn't have been getting any more than 10 mpg at that speed
This was the longest trip I've made in the car in the 16 month's I've owned it. The odometer passed through 125,000 miles during the trip. The A/C ran great, the coolant temp was in the middle, oil pressure at 5bar...... everything was awsome. Use about 1.5 quarts of oil.
I played 18 holes on Friday afternoon and then again on Saturday. The 928 is the best car for going on a long drive with golf clubs.

I guess driving from Charlottesville to the Orlando area is like driving from Boston to Dulles. The car ran perfectly. Just add gas and check the oil. And running at those speeds with a radar detector tended to keep me very awake and alert.

Bill; the Boston to Dulles trip is 450 miles each way. SITM from Boston was 900 miles one way. You need a few hundred miles to settle in and enjoy the 928 experience. Short 1 hour trips around here just don't do it.

You may have mentioned this in another thread, but I'll ask anyway - how do you have your Valentine One wired/installed? I thought about getting one, but it seems they're quite cumbersome to 'hide'.

I didn't try to hide it. I mounted it using the suction cups to the windshield, just above the rearview mirror to the right. I used the cigarette lighter adapter and the coiled power cord. I didn't hard wire it at all. I can't use it in Virginia, so I'll put it back in the box, ready for the next out of state trip.

There's just nothing like these beasts out on the highway at speed. My work situation has required about 15 trips from Virginia to Detroit over the last year, 550 mile one way or 30 gallons of go juice. That's about 16k miles split 80/20 between the 84 and the 78. I have an absolute blast each and every trip. It's like a shark swimming thru a school of tuna. Best GT ever built. Thought to deed is so quick when you're already moving at 80 and the long range comfort is outstanding. I routinely pull out at 4am , arrive at my desk at noon, and have no fatigue from the drive. Great adrenaline pumps. I'm also certain that my beasts run as well as they do due to how much they get driven.
I'm bolting outta Detroit tomorrow morning. I'd sure like to get a 7 hour trip in the log book...

"Man, this car just eats up the miles."
Definitely THE car for a travelling salesman whose territory is Seattle to Chicago to San Antonio to LA and evertything in between.
I'm not in sales but I enjoyed every meter of my utterly reliable Austin - LA - SF - Austin trip a few years back.

A LOT worse than that. I have an acquaintance whose H2 gets about 7mpg at legal speeds between Fort Worth and Austin. He might have been able to watch the needle drop.

Sacramento to LA a mere 400 miles was definitely not long enough to stretch the legs of my bro's 88. I'm sure he did some good stretching though between L.A. and Dallas. Sounds like it was a good time Bill. I miss those midnite runs with my bro.

here is my V-1 remote; it is nothing to install and hard wire into a switchable connection in the fuse block: http://forums.rennlist.com/upload/v1_mount_copy2.jpg
Bill:
After 120 is when the car really settles down and you begin grinning, particularly after the second hour. (At least that is what someone told me).

Ron - thanks for the pic!.....I might get one.....
I'm "really" trying not to speed much; only on rare occasions, when I feel safe/comfortable doing so. I drive a red one, so I might as well be waving a BIG RED FLAG saying "here I am!"....

Hey, I towed a 928 1100 miles in a 24 hour period the beginning of this week. I guess this doesn't make me part of the long drive 928 club though.... I had already drive 350 miles in the six hours before picking up the 928 as well....
The diesel Suburban is pretty comfortable to drive long distances too, and can run at 75 mph without too much of a problem.
Now I have 5 928s, although none of them are actually usable right now
