Default CarFax and Porsche Recall on 928's

Hello everyone. I just got done running a car fax on a 928 that I was looking at and it appears that Porsche issued a recal back on the 10th for cat heat plates. Did anyone know this? I hadn't seen a thing in any of the threads.

Speaking of Recalls, anyone ever had their ball joints replaced for free just like it says on Nichol's site? http://www.nichols.nu/tip315.htm I need steel ball joints and free sounds good to me.

I've known about it for a couple of years, but have never taken mine in to be replaced......they look fine to me . Besides, I don't have a cat. anymore. It seems like it was on the 85-86 only or maybe 84 too. I can't remember exactly. I don't know why that part was recalled though. Maybe if the cats got clogged the heat would burn your feet?

I forgot to mention, it think there are one or two recalls (maybe a few more on some models) of some kind or another on about every year 928.

PCA denied any knowledge of any ball joint issue on my 78... I had to do it on my dime(a few actually).

What years are covered in this CAT plate recall?

I just ran another '85 off ebay and it turned up clean, no outstanding recalls. Interesting, if you want me to run your car for you let me know. I paid for the 30 day plan while I continue to look for my 928. PM me if you want me to run yours. I will not disclose to ANYONE but the individual requests the info.

OK, I have now run 4 or 5 '84-86's and I can not seem to find a one that had that recall outstanding. Maybe the first one I ran missed it some time back who knows. I'll just keep it zipped until someone who knows pipes in.

You won't be able to run a Carfax on mine... VIN# is too short.

The following was taken from an Adobe PDF file found HERE. It is a good place to find recall information.

"This is to notify you of a voluntary Recall Campaign involving 6905 (number affected) Porsche 928S and 928S4 Model Years 1985 to 1987, within the following VIN ranges:

1985 Model 928S -from WP0JB092_F S860061 to WP0JB092_F S862278
1986 Model 928S -from WP0JB092_GS860061 to WP0JB092_GS863010
1987 Model 928 S4 -from WP0JB092_HS860061 to WP0JB092_HS862461

It was determined that the heat shield above the catalytic converter is inadequate under certain circumstances involving engine malfunction. The problem arises where, due to among other reasons, improper maintenance or repair, such as improperly secured ignition wires, the engine misfires resulting in overheating of the catalytic converter. If this condition is not detected, materials in the vicinity of the catalytic converter including the lines for the automatic transmission fluid could ignite and cause an underbody fire due to insufficiency of the heat shield."

The parts required to perform each Recall are, for:
a) Vehicles with manual transmission and vehicles with automatic transmission up to VIN WP0JB092_GS861000.
Quantity 1 928 504 991 00 Description: Heat shield
b) Vehicles with automatic transmission from VIN WP0JB092_GS861001
Quantity 1 000 043 125 00 Description: Kit
which consists of the following parts:
Quantity 1 928 504 991 00 Description: Heat shield
Quantity 2 960 307 917 00 Description: Sleeves
Quantity 1 926 307 190 00 Description: Bracket

In the customer notification it states:
“Therefore, you should arrange for an appointment with your Porsche dealer, as soon as possible to have the original heat shield replaced with the larger improved heat shield. On vehicles equipped with automatic transmission, a mounting bracket will be replaced and heat resistant sleeves installed on the transmission fluid lines in those models where the lines pass in the drive train tunnel. The ignition wiring will be checked to ensure that it was properly secured.
The necessary parts to perform this Recall should be available at your Porsche dealer. The estimated time to perform this repair is approximately one and one half (1 ½) to two (2) hours depending on the vehicle model year and transmission version. However, your Porsche may have to be left longer at your Porsche dealership since the exhaust system has to cool down before work can commence. This repair will, of course be free of charge to you.
If your Porsche dealer fails, or is unable to perform this repair within a reasonable period of time, you may call or write to:

Porsche Cars North America, Inc.
100 West Liberty Street
P.O. Box 30911
Reno, Nevada 09520-3911
Attn: Customer Assistance
Telephone: (702) 348-3154

or

Administrator
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
U.S. Department of Transportation
Washington, D.C. 20590

(The recall was issued in 1989 so the address/telephone listed above may be out of date)
Also, included in the PDF file is the step by step procedure for replacement.

I have an early '86. Would Porsche STILL do the recall repair if I need it or is there some sort of time frame from the date of recall? Thanks

I called the local Porsche dealer here in Salt Lake and spoke to the man in charge of the Porsche sevice side, and discussed what I had read on Nicols sight. He was going to do it free of charge until
I gave him the Euro vin then he said that he wouldnt honor that on a Euro car, but he probly would on a U.S. I asked hin what the difference was and he couldnt say, other than they wouldnt replace it on the recall. I do think that Porsche would on the U.S. cars. This is in regards to the ball joints on 83 and prior.

Good luck

I wonder if there would be an easy way to check if a car has already had the work done - just the VIN perhaps?

DoH! - just followed the link posted WAY above for a way to check if the car had the work done to it! Next time, I'll try to read first!
