Default G-Tech runs!!!

I just got my G-tech in the mail today! After many headaches trying to get the stupid thing stuck to the windshield (thats another story) I was off to find some nice deserted country road.

Conditions were excellent, low 50's with light fog and high humidity.

On the freeway headed out of town I tried a "instant G" reading of a 60-80mph downshift (I love doing that when it kicks down to 2nd and BWAAAH..your gone) got a best reading of .31g. Which felt about right.

1st timed run was for the 1/4 mile. Got a good start, but a little too much wheelspin (damm OSHTO all season tires) 0-60 flashed by at 5.98 seconds, 1/4 mile at 14.52 @101.8mph! About what I expected...1st and 2nd gear are very strong, but 3rd falls of noticeably (4 speed auto). Decided to try a different road.

Did a horsepower run on the way to a scale, estimated my total weight at 3720lbs...damm meter fell off windshield, so I held it on the armrest. Got a great start (best so far, car felt very strong) held it down through the top of second gear then let up.... 299HP!!!!!!!!!!!! This can't be right for a stock car with only K&N and RMB.... Thats about 375+ at the crank!!

Get the car weighed at 3460 lbs. Set new weight at 3640lbs....Try horsepower again on the way home...1st try..horrible (but very cool) burnout all the way through 1st gear...220hp....try again rolling into throttle (car doesn't feel as strong) 257hp...about what I figured it should be....once more (a little better start, again car feels slower) 246hp.... Decide thats enough beating for today and head home.

Final thoughts, the sun came out and it got about 10 degrees warmer for the last three HP runs? Could this plus the corrected weight make that much of a difference? I'm quite happy with the 0-60 time, would like to see the 1/4 mile time come down a bit (goal is 13's, but will take some mods to get there), but the 1/4 speed is quite good. I figure on a real dyno my car is in the 260 range (G techs read lower since they count aero-drag)..still a fun afternoon in the 928!!!!!!!

I tried one and they are very amusing

Only problem I could find is that they are only as accurate as the driver... If one lets of the gas at, lets say 97km/h instead of 100 on a 0-100 run.. the hole readings go nuts and you get these "a little to good to be true results"...

I got mine from Ebay for $39.95, ended up about $47 after shipping. There was a whole bunch of them for the same price. I think the company I bought it from was "Gtechpro" store or something like that. Great ebayer, I got the G-tech 3 days after I ordered it!

Your results sound about right. My 5spd ran 3 runs. 2 were 5.9sec and one was 6.5sec 0-60. I didn't test hp on the GTech (I used the Escort thing) but on the dyno we saw almost 300rwhp. The Porsche 928 is a phenomenal car!!!!!!!

What are you using to indicate your speed in the 0-60, etc.? 928 speedometers are all over the map. Most read quite a bit above actual and the 5.9 0-60 is faster than would be expected for an AT S4. My speedo reads about 3 above at 165MPH actual (judged by electronic speed trap), which is on the low end of the error range. On Tom Cloutier's dyno my 89 S4 (stock except RMB) did 262HP. If you can spin the tires with a stock S4 AT, your tires have lousy traction.

The speed is determined with the accelerometer in the unit. It does not read instant speed, just flashes the 0-60 time and then the 1/4 mile, or the HP depending on what mode it is in.

I just got a GTECH RR. It is an interesting piece. Seems easy to use as it is less dependent on mounting position than the earlier models. Below is a screenshot of three runs

#1. Black trace, Transmission in "2", No power braking, just mash the throttle, shift from 1st to 2nd at 6K, shift 2nd 3rd at 6200. 1/4 mile in 14.2, 0-60 in 5.75. When looking at the RPM graph I can see that it momentarily lost traction at about the 0.7 second point of the run

#2. Similar to above run, hit the brakes at 11 seconds because of traffic ahead and slowed to a calm 76mph as I made the 1/4 mile mark. Similar time to black trace up to where I needed to slow down. Too bad that I could not leave my foot in it, if you look at the red vs. black run trends in the tabulated data, the red run was shaping up to have a better 1/4 mile time.

#3. Green trace, leave the gear in "D". Mash the throttle, 1st to 2nd shift at 5300 an then only ran long enough to get 0-60 time, which was slightly slower than above two tries.

It seems to be reasonably consistant.

Last May I took the car to Firebird raceway and did some 1/4 mile runs the results are in the same ballpark as what the G-Tech reads

-----------Track ticket------ GTECH
60'----------2.223s-----------2.283s
330'--------6.193s-----------6.127s
1/8---------9.383s-----------9.257s
1/8---------76.99mph------80.82mph
1000'------12.095s---------11.937s
1/4---------14.378s---------14.206s
1/4---------98.78mph------99.56mph

The car was showroom stock when at the race track, with all accesories, spare tire, tools, pump etc. On the GTECH runs it was still completely stock with the exception of a recently added RMB.

I guess Issac Newton and F=MA still works!!

Anyone can go to the GTECH support site and download the PASS software. That lets you view the GTECH GTP raw data a number of different ways. You can then load a number of other cars and compare. Z sent me his GTP file and I have just sent him the above three files.

I agree that my tires (came with car) aren't exactly the highest traction out there, but a decent all season longer wearing tire. Part of the problem is I was out in the country so most of the roads aren't the best and they often get coated with a nice thick layer of dust, so traction is not as good as some city streets or racetracks.

The G-tech is a cool toy, it appears to be reasonably accurate and is good enough for me to use for comparison purposes as I get upgrades. You can compare both accleration times and also the G-forces generated...higher G's, more power pushing you back in the seat = bigger smile on the face!

My wheel spin indicator comes on quite a bit, it's called the PSD indicator. Wheels will stop spinning when the PSD lights up, but it stays on long enough to let you know you were there.

I just got the RR the other day with the PASS software. VERY cool little toy! Especially when you can go to the GTECH forums and download other cars data (mustangs, 993 etc etc) and over lay them on your own.

cost a wee bit of $$$ but well , well worth it.

Just got the Escort Version (G-Timer GT1). Only had 1 chance at a run so far, and it was on a slight curve the entire length of the quarter mile.

87 S4 A/T w/RMB. Slick SO3's in the back allowed way too much wheelspin off the line.

Qtr Mile: 14.3 @ 99.3
0-60: 5.8 secs

Can't wait to see what new rear tires and a straight (versus curved) quarter mile yields.
