Powder coat or real thick paint. I think I know why the original coating was so THICK. And why a lot of people go with the WRINKLE finish:

The casting sucks!!! I am in the process of sanding and polishing these cam covers to install in Helmut prior to putting on the Murf Kit. It is a good thing I have plenty of time on my hands up here because I'm gonna need it. And this is just the cam covers, I still have to polish the '86 intake (huge), the oil filler neck and various other items that will be visible. It will be nice and shiney when I'm done but damn it is going to be a long road to get there.

I had the intakes, cam covers, both upper timing belt covers, thermo housing and 90 degree elbow painted "Black Chrome". It is a subtle look as opposed to the engine just popping out at you. I like to think it looks stealthy.

I don't have the paint code because it was matched to my request for just black chrome. I can get the manufacturer and code if you need it. The work was done by a coater who does most of his work on aircraft components in AZ. I would mention the names of the folks I went through, but I do not want them to get a swamp full of phone calls. This is because my parts were the first and last GTS components they will do. I am pretty sure that means S4 as well. It was a bit more work than they had anticipated to get it just right. I will ask, but I think they want to stay away from doing this work in the future...not enough time and money for them.

Shane, mine looked like that as well, maybe not as bad, but had pits in them none the less. I just took a light coat of filler spread with a credit card and skimmed over the bad spots. With a light sanding it was done. The coating and the wrinkle helped hide the rest.

I had mine crinkle black powder coated to go with the vader look of the rest of the car. I'm still trying to figure out the writing color for PORSCHE, etc.

Can't use filler since I'm going with the polished look, and the filler wouldn't be polishable. So back to sanding.

FWIW, my '86.5 meteormetallic was powdercoated in black chrome and appears the same as Tony's. It is close to the car color for anyone else who has such a color. It is subtle in my opinion. I don't know the code but simply told the shop the name of the color. It is not a good job with some bubbles on the surface; though not readily apparent they detract from the intended effect and are not acceptable to me. But be careful choosing a shop: lots of sand was left in the intake runners which could be a nightmare you don't want.

If I hadn't chosen black chrome, I would do it in satin matte crinkle black. Great appearance and machine-like.

Ron got any pictures?

I'll be doing it all myself thus eliminating any chance of a screw up, or at least if there is I can only blame myself.

I'll try to post some photos of the engine compartment tomorrow. Today is too busy.

Carl & Tony
Very nice looking covers/intake! Personally I like the Ferrari red wrinkle finish on the valve covers. haven't decided on the the intake yet? A friend has his painted black (high temp paint)when the engine was rebuilt by the shop, cheap solution and looks great! Maybed red valve covers with the silver intake with red porsche and black 32 V.....or go the chrome route? I've seen one of those with the porsche 32V grinded off...looks sharp
