engine rebuild suggestions
I'm going to rebuild the 4.5l 78 euro motor
it has 100k + est and has been sitting on and off for a bit now
it spins free and easy
I have full gasket set, rebuilt 79 euro heads, filters, etc
I know I need wp/tensioner arm rebuild/piston rings/alt/starter, plugs, wires for sure
I also want to go with new/rb fuel dist/injectors/fuel rails
what have I missed?
I'm not looking for massive power, just a good solid original motor

What bolts did you use to put it on the stand? I'm trying to track down a few 100mm long, 12mm wide, with 1.5 pitch. Is this right? The bell housing bolts don't fit through the receptacles on my arms.

not sure Tim, my buddy ordered the stand to rebuild the 79 that ended up having a cracked block, I'll check and let you know about the bolts. they fit perfect

That guy on ebay has the pistons again - this time 650 for pistons, pins, rings, and clips 10:1 compression.
Euro intake and TB for sure. Maybe megasquirt? I'm so centrist I think everybody would do what I do....
Headers. Port match intake.
New rod bearings, mains, ALL seals.
Balance rotating assembly. Polish and crack test crank. Maybe ARp rod bolts? 250 for all of them isn't bad. New small end bushings on the rods.
Slightly lap the bores with the final stage paste (find someone with a sunnen machine and who knows the material)
You could have another 250,000 mile engine.

What are your plans for the euro heads coming off this motor?

Tim,
I ordered bolts from McMaster-Carr to mount my engine to the stand. They are on line and in some cases you can order in the morning and have them on your door step in the evening. Google McMaster Carr, and when the site opens type bolts in the search field then look for what you need in the selection. Or just call them and tell them what you need.

First, ditch the AIR plumbing. You'll thanks me for this later.
Get the correct block-to-girdle goop (Loctite 571?) from your favorite Porsche parts specialist. Get a mini roller with thin nap from Home Despot or similar. In my opinion, this was the most stressful part of the job.
Lots of other doo-dads you may need. Mounts for the CIS plenum? Rod nuts? Washers for lower block? Washers and nuts for heads? Flywheel bolts? Drain plugs?
The bolts are 12mm by 1.5mm pitch. Found that ones from the suspension work for this. Length depends on the stand.

Thanks Glenn, Hupp, et al.
I'm paying special attention to this thread, since I am mapping out what will be done to my own recently removed engine.
Being totally unfamiliar with the situation, I have to ask: do the K-Jet (CIS) heads work with the L-Jet (AFM) system? What I'm getting at is, could I mount a set of '80-'83 Euro S Heads to my block and run the same fuel injection system? According to the small blue Bosch book, there is a limited capacity available on an L-Jet system. On the other hand, 300HP is plenty for me.

anything that touches the timing belt, gears, rollers, oil pump, waterpump, etc... motor mounts, ck the torque tube really well since it's easy to get to w/no motor... all rubber that's not already really newish... head studs/nuts... fuel rails? didn't know they wear out.... good gains on OB's w/headers, from what I've read/heard... get a good parts cleaner, invaluable for removing all the nasty stuff from good parts... frige w/beer - you'll want that for times you get wrong part, make new "discoveries", or just want to celebrate finally putting all the parts back in on the 3rd try... shop manuals?

Rob reminds me that there are a lot of other bits that get convenient when you can stand in the engine bay. I put in a new clutch slave and blue hose, for example. And engine mounts.
Checking every hose and then replacing the suspect ones has strong value.

Shop manuals on CD, and a nice large screen computer in the shop.

The wire wheel for sure to clean all the studs and the like. Plan on spending lots of time if you want it really clean. The biggest pain in the rear is cleaning all the parts....like 20-30 hours worth of cleaning. There are lots of gaskets missing from the reinz set...twice now!
