Default S4 AT 1st gear downshift gone

My 89 S4 used to drop into first at low speed (less than 5MPH) or when stopped if I pulled the shift selector down to 2. Then it would start off in 1st. That is normal behavior for this tranny.

This week this downshift stopped happening, and it starts out in 2nd from a stop even with the shifter poulled down. If I floor it it will downshift into 1st.

How do I get the usual downshift back? Is there a shifter adjustment for this on the tranny?

I'd check that cable too. It is amazing to me what different behaviors can result in these cars by a 1/4 turn this way or that on the adjuster. I'll still dialing mine in....

Any one think it could be vaccum related?

Maybe the Vac. mod on the trans or a broken or loss line?

The vacuum line to my trans. got disconnected at it's last service and it made the shifting so harsh there was no mistaking that there was a major problem. IMHO if the shifting hasn't changed, then it is probably in the cable.

Yeah, vacuum is probably OK - shift quality is unchanged. I'll check that cable, but kickdown is fine for all gears, just not starting in first any longer.
