Flowmaster Muffler update, new product that will benefit us 928 owners.
Hey guys, thought I'd might let you know that Flowmaster has come out with a 40 series muffler that is offset in/offset out same side that will benefit our cars. As most of you know our intermediate mufflers are offset same side. On a side note, you will need 2 mufflers in order to replace both intermediates. For those of you who want to do the Flowmast upgrade for a very inexpensive price, you can now purchase these mufflers at Jegs.com
My car will be going under the torch and welder to get these new 40 series mufflers installed in place of my intermediate exhaust while still maintaining my rear muffler bypass. I will let you guys know when it happens about 3 weeks from now. I'll further do more research into this and let you know if its worth the upgrade.
Note: Jegs gives you the option of purchasing either 2 1/4" (factory size per each engine bank) or 3". I reccommend 2 1/4" since 3" would only be most effect if there is a Y-collector involved after the catalytic convertor.

Let us know how they sound. I know that the 40 series is new, and it probably doesn't apply to the old complains, but several folks of old had complained that the Flowmasters were too raspy and had lots of interior noise.
I'm running Spintechs in place of the intermediate mufflers, with an RMB and an X pipe in place of the cats. Absolutely great sound from outside the car, but not too intrusive from inside at idle and/or cruise. (at least until I removed all that sound deadening material from the rear)
Hopefully the 40 series will sound great. Good luck with them.

Andy,
When you get it done, pictures would be most appreciated. My local muffler shop looked under the car and said that they needed pictures to figure out how they might make any changes. They were "dazed and confused".
Thanks

whall, your muffler shop has amateurs working for them I can't even weld an exhaust system or bend piping and yet I know exactly how to do this setup jk btw, I'm sure they are a good muffler shop. I'll post pictures immediately not to mention I'm thinking of putting a tech bulletin up on Rennlist for it afterward.

I think exhaust shops vary by a large amount. I went to Midas and asked about having an additional O2 bung installed into my exhaust, and they looked at me like I was crazy. After I explained what it was, and what I wanted to do, they quoted me $80.
I went to another shop my friend reccomended, and they knew exactly what I wanted and only charged $30. They seem like great people and I will be having them build an X-Pipe for me since Ott isn't selling them anymore. I was quoted a $200 ballpark figure for an X-Pipe.

Andy you are about to replace two resonators basically hollow cans with a straight perforated pipe inside. You can look in one end and see out the other, no obstructions, no baffles, no restrictions with two MUFFLERS ?? I do not think that is an "upgrade". If you are planning to remove your cat then you would need some mufflers.

Are you serious Jim? Those intermediate mufflers aren't mufflers????? More like just a cherry bomb with more packng???? Oh BTW, I have a rear muffler bypass too. But I want yours from 928 Intl instead because of the piping size and mine's only 2" ID.
Anyways if the intermediates are straight thru you just saved me 160 dollars that I will put into your RMB!

Thanks Jim, there goes my FM stock (JK)!
Jim no lie! Their just a tone chamber, somewhat like the spintech, but better.
FWIW, I have run differant combinations:
Totaly stock
Stock w/ GTS rear muffler
Sock w/ RMB
Gutted cats, Resonators, Stock S4 rear muffler
Gutted cats, Resonators, Stock GTS rear muffler
Gutted cats, Resonators, RMB
Custom made glasspacks (within the gutted cats), Resonators, Stock S4 rear muffler
Custom made glasspacks (within the gutted cats), Resonators, Stock GTS rear muffler
Custom made glasspacks (within the gutted cats), Resonators, RMB
Still more to do, but the Custom made glasspacks (within the gutted cats), Resonators and RMB works and sounds nice.
Next will be an X pipe, Resonators and RMB.
