My car has no mufflers - straight pipe's after the cat. At 80mph in 5th with the windows down I cannot hear it. It's not raspy at all, here is the video:

I'll chime in here too..have had a variety of combos on both my old 87S4 AT and my 89GT as well as exposure to a few on others cars too..... My preference is the Stock manifolds into the Ott X and then into 2.5 inch pipes...Bullit (or other sound absorbing) mufflers in place of the mid resonators and then 2.5 inch pipe back. Nice tone..not harsh at all

I have run the stock manifolds into GT mid resonators and a RMB..and it is wicked loud. Worse in the S4 AT since cruise is around 2500 rpm (with 2.2. rear) and that is where it resonates loudly. With the GT (2.73 rear) it cruises around 3k and it isn't as loud but at WOT..it is wake the dead time.

Another good combo is the stock manifolds, xcrossover, into the larger resonators.(.87, early 88, and GTS have these) and out a RMB. Nice and toned down around town but opens up nicely at WOT..not too harsh.

Currently I am running the stock manifolds into the X and stock GT mids but have put the rear muffler back on. A little too quiet for my taste but keeps the neighbors happy.

My second favorite combo is believe it or not...the stock manifolds and cats stock GT mid resonators..and a RMB..just enough rumble to set off car alarms... ;-) and pleasant throughout the entire rev range...

Later,
Tom

Stock manifolds with Ott crossover into a single 3" pipe into 1 Borla into another Borla gives the 84 Euro S motor (16 valve) a "vicious snarl" sound. VERY loud, unbearable at normal freeway speeds, but SWEET above 90 mph. Replacing the Ott crossover with S4 cats gives it the perfect sound, what I would call an "angry growl". So the Ott crossover is used when I ORR in Nevada, S4 cats stay on rest of the year.

Rich,

So when the cats are on you are running a 2 into 1 setup going to a dual Borla (in series) system? On my S4, I also have a dual Borla system, although mine are setup in tandem behind the cats. I am not satisfied with my sound though. It's too subtle... I want more lawlessness.

Rob, yep, that's the setup I have. The early cars are not able to run dual pipes like the later cars due to space issues between gearbox and battery box, so I ran one 3 inch pipe with Borla's in series. (I know some Euro's and the 85 US cars ran dual exhaust pipes side-by-side into 1 resonator then into 1 rear muffler). The S4 cats function as good mufflers, I'm really happy with the sound. With the Ott in place, forget about talking to your passenger or listening to the radio....it was a long trip to the Pony Express and back, Ann put in earplugs!

Today, I installed the GT resonators with a GT muffler, and the gutted cat with the loose internal tubes: A much better sound, and a reasonable weight loss - huge side by side difference as seen in the pic below: now to do the next 'cat' surgery. This is looking more like cutting out the chambers and the loose tubes inside (left by a PO 'cat-gutter') - and welding in straight stainless to leave an "H" pipe.
The overall sound in the S4 is far better - but still not as nice as the 16v with a fairly similar set up - although it is a larger, single pipe.Maybe after the surgery ... ?

I can vouch for the sound of Rich's car. It is sweet. Rode in it for several hours and was able to carry on a good conversation.

My car has no resonators and all other bits stock. No bad resonance and nice burble. Not as good as Rich's but nice enough for free.

Regards,

Warren, I didn't mean G-packs only.

X-Over, G-packs, Resonators and RMB.

Hacker P,My car has no mufflers - straight pipe's after the cat. My point was that if a person removes the cats from the mix, a set of G-packs helps take out the rasp. The cats do a good job not just acting as a slight restrictor, but as a muffler as well.

I'm currently running a the Borla system (from 928 intl) with a gutted cat. If I let the car idle inthe driveway long enough my wife and neighbor tend to come outside and gripe.

Jim is correct regarding the irritating resonance from the hollow cat. On my shark this usually occurs arounr 2000rpm - exhaust note gets really screwed up. I'm thinking about installing some test pipes to fix the problem.
