Default CV Boot Replacement

It is time to replace the CV Joint boots on the trans-axles and wanted some advice:
1) Are the boots symmetrical, hence all the boots are the same part and interchangeable ?
2) What brand is recommended ? I saw the Beck/Arnley kit for $10; or is GKN better ?
Thanks in advance.

My experience is with an '85, so YMMV. The boots are the same...inner and outer...you need two "kits" per side. I used the GKN ones...from 928 Intl...very nice, German stuff. I'd highly recommend them, but have no experience with any other type.

You will need a special tool to fasten the metal bands around the boots. Can't recall what the tool is called right now...I improvised with a set of pincer-type pliers and it worked just fine. Just make sure you local the fastening part of the band away from the mounting holes of the inner CV joint, otherwise you will have problems getting one of the mounting bolts in place. Ask me how I know!

There are two types of metal bands for CV joints. Click here to see what I went though on my 78. Both types of bands are shown with appropriate tools for tightening them.

make sure the boots have the big ridge on the inside of the large end - it locates in a groove on the joint to improve dust sealing. Drill a small hole/s in the clip so you can squeeze the ends together with needle nose pliers.

They don't all have that ridge. I still have a set with the ridge, they WILL NOT fit on my car. I ended up getting 911 boots, which fit fine.

Well, first thing is to get your new boots from 928International or 928 Specialists. They'll send you the right ones for your model year. There's probably 3 different kinds of axle/cv styles on these beasts.

Next, realize that this maintenance looks easy before you get into it. Coming apart is straight forward. Going back together is a little more involved. You have to disassemble one end of each shaft, slide both boots on, reassemble end. There's a trick to the cv... the fat sides of the outer race must line up with the skinny points on the inner star as you insert the ball bearings. lol Sorry. I'm just laughing at the idea of holding a cv joint in your hand in a dozen pieces that you can clean, grease, reassemble and expect another 100k out of it. Amazing. Anyway... that detail beat me up for 3 hours one fine Saturday afternoon.

Good luck and have fun.
