Yes
I did this mod on my 82. The existing seat rail is sort of two upside down U channels. I cut the top 1.5 inches off both rails and fabbed four pieces the width of the U out of aluminum bar. I clamped the bars in place and drilled from the sides and bolted, then drilled and tapped from the top. The result if very nice: I'm 6'5" and in the lowest position I can sit comfortably, and my wife who is 5'4" is comforable in the highest position.

Hi v-tach
I modified the rail welded to the floor of the car. Clearly not a job for the purist or the concours car. In fact the when I did this (15 year ago or so) I had very little in the way of tools so it is a bit rough. Cutting down the U was very difficult as I was pretty much armed with a drill motor, a hack saw, and a file. These days my $20 angle grinder from Harbor Freight woud make short work of the task. An I would probably mill the aluminum parts rather than cutting them with a hack saw.

I had the same problem. 6'2" with a long torso, I Tracked the car once with the stock seats and banged my head on every bump. I don't feel in control of the car when I laying way back so I wound up replacing the stock seats with Recaro "Speed" seats. Gained over 2 inches of head room and my helmet never hits now. I can replace the Recaro's with the stock seats if I ever sell the car. (not). As a side note my wife and I have taken several 1000 - 2000 mile long weekend trips in these seats and they are fine.
