Default Engine Stand Capacity

I am planning on pulling the engine from my 79 to replace gaskets, steering rack and motor mounts.

Is a 750Lb capacity engine stand sufficient for the 79 engine (dry)?

Also, is the method for attaching the engine to the stand the same as for say a chev or ford motor? I assume Imust get some metric bolts. Does anyone know what size?

Thanks in advance
Sean

I know someone that has a 2,000lb stand with an S4 motor on it. It's leaning a bit down, not sure I'd trust a 750lb stand. The price difference should be about $50 - get the larger one.

Please don't buy one of those Pepboy or Autozone specials. A 750 lb capacity stand will tilt and tip the first time you lean over it and put some torque on a bolt. Makes me cringe just to think of it. We had a couple of light duty stands at school (where I taught vocational classes) and a Saturn 6 pulled it over when it was being rolled form one poit to another. One of the side braces collapsed. I have a Summit with a 2000 lb capacity. Here's the web site:

The big block stand is about $150 including shipping and taxes. After you get through using it for your 928, you can hoist and work on like truck diesels.

HTH, YMMV, M2CW

The 2000lb stand at Summet looks identical to the one Harbor Freight has - same one my friend has his S4 motor on. It does work, is sturdy but would not want anything less.

12mm with 1.5mm threads for those bolts. Need them long, too. The pitch is common on Porsches and uncommon at hardware stores.

And get the big stand with four casters, not the cheap tri-pod style.

The most expensive stand is still cheaper than the repair bill if your engine tips over. Even the sanp-on stand with the electronic rotating system.
