Default The Door Handle Won't Open-

I felt like Central Florida trailer-trash tonight....

Yeah, we have a lot of tornado-attractors here. Why I don't know, since these are the province of either rednecks wearing wife-beaters [park your car on the blocks please, right next to the dead refrigerator~] and sadly...doing exactly such, or of retirees from up north who are short on cash.

[Sorry to be political, but I'll point out that the Republicans want each of us to be personally responsible for our medical expenses. And our retirement expenses too- Great. Now when are they going to lobby for pay increases to offset all these sudden costs?]

So there I was, at the most high-end dance club in town.....opening my door redneck style by entering on the right and rolling my window down. No I haven't pulled the door panel yet- I need to fly to Belgium tomorrow, and it just wont work...

I lifted the door handle and it gave a quick pop. What do y'all think broke? I havent pulled the door panel yet. What typically breaks when you lift the handle and it does nothing?

I would say the inside right side of the door handle. That white metal sucks. If the door handle lifts up and down and does nothing then that is most likely it. Door handle replace......Really bites.

Right side of door handle broke. Yep thats it. However as a get you by, you can remove door panel and adjust the release mechanism to allow you to use the handle till you get a new one or the other side of it breaks.

There are some easily replaceable steel linkage whatchamacallits in there that I got from Susan at Devek. It just takes time to get all the other stuff out of the way. Then be prepared with band aids to put on the scratches on your hand as you reach into the handle mechanism. It took me about an hour and a half to do the first side, and of course less to do the other side. The worst part was fitting the latch/handle assembly back together and then the vapor barrier and the door panel. Parts cost was minor. You will find that because of the sheild which makes it difficult to break into the car also makes it "fun" to get the mechanism out. *#$&@!!**#! Helps if you are an elf with small hands. Maybe you can find one in the woods and give him some beer to do it, because it will go faster that way.

Hmm. I have long fingers, but not small hands. Perhaps I'll have one of the local kids help me!

Dammit! White metal, also known as "pot metal", nearly worthless steel forged in Chinese and East German mills largely for political purposes. Essentially shiny ceramics. They built VW Rabbits and first generation Honda Accords out of this crap; both designs rusted out QUICK-

Sounds like the standard failure - 928.537.063.04 - about $50 from Jeannie @ (828) 766-9280.

Greg has some tips on installation at http://www.nichols.nu/tip378.htm

A search on here might also give some help in installing the inner handle.

BTW - the part appears to be made from die-cast zinc, commonly referred to as pot metal.

As far as I can tell all 928 door handles will eventually break. Seems to be a recurrant porsche theme since 914s are just the same way. Replacement is not too bad, but sure could have been better thought out. Between my two cars I think I have lost 3 or 4.

Normy, personally responsible for medical expenses and retirement...next thing you know it will be your responsibility for 928 repair cost.

Had to do the drivers door on the S3. It would open but you had to work it.

It's a crap chore, Normy, I did it and it took a couple of hours. There's a good writeup on the web somewhere.

Tip: you can delete the big flat plate in there that's supposed to foil slim jims... unless you'd rather the stereo thief smash your window instead. Saves some hassle.

Also, as you re-assemble: test each sub-component of the assembly for proper function before going on to the next. You'll see what I mean once you're in there...

Exactly the advice I was hoping to find.

Like the rear door handle bolt isn't impossible enough to get started, the damn cover is not cooperating at all.

I'm leaving it out!
