Default Possible source of vibrations ?

I know it's not much to go by, but my car has a vibration at around speeds of 80mph and up, that is most noticeable through the throttle pedal. Does this ring a bell to anyone ?

speed related vibrations are often found in wheel balance. With this car there are several other places to look. Your car is an AT, correct? see if you get the same vibration if you hold the car in 3rd gear and drive it at 80mph.....are your tires almost used up? scolloped on the edges at all? usuallu it is tires other places to look:

have you checked out your engine mounts? shocks ok, wheel bearings ok? ball joints ok?

I have two words: transmission mounts. your tranny shoud have a gap of about 1 to 1.5 inches between it and the rear cross-member.

I just replaced mine last week. My God, what a difference. It was just like driving over mini rumble strips before the fix. Now it's smooth as silk. So smooth that i can feel that I have flat spotted front tires, from some hard braking on fun runs over the summer. But that doesn't show up until about 90 mph, and gets worse as you get closer to 110.

928s can be so smooth that you can't even tell they're running, and also if you have a loose wheel bearing, that will cause some vibration, and also any loose front spoilers on S models. - Ruf

Hey Gretch,
Yep, it's an auto. The tires are still looking good and are worn evenly, so I suppose it's just wear and tear on one of the other things you and Rufus mentioned. Could be anything really, the car has ca 120.000 miles on the odometer now and none of the above have been replaced. Will try today to take her to 80 mph in 3rd and see if that is different.

Rufus, it sure can be smooth. But in a sort of Jekyll and Hide manner, one day it's perfect, the next it's so rough you'd think something is about to fall off. Strange, although I'd say it also could be me getting paranoid; that's what large maintenance bills do to a man
