???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? ??

There is no controversy ... an engine is definitely art, it was lovingly designed and fashioned. Everything about my cars is art to me.

Jim and Heinrich: Well said!

When i was teaching for a year, writing and comprehension were among the biggest challenges I had with the students. 7th quarter in college, many were not able to understand step-by-step instructions. I would explain things three times, then hand out a written summare of the steps - and still there would be students who asked me what they were supposed to do. It was always a big divide between the ones who understood English, and the ones who did not. Amazingly, most of the weak students had grown up here in the US.

Ernest: In British ("real") English, "learnt" is correct past tense. I looked it up in the dictionary. I had never heard of it, and had to learn the hard way by embarassing myself first...

Stupid is as Stupid does. And Spelling has nothing to do with intellegence. A few years ago when I was in college I had "Stupid" english classes also. We all did. Or Stupid Math, Physics, whatever classes. Admit it. You only realize that later, you probably should've paid more attention in class. Doesn't matter high school or college we've all said, "I hate that stupid class." Well it happens, don't yell at him for that.

Anyway, most anything can be a work of art. In my business we build OEM equipment, to most people its very square and meant only to do one thing. But once you look into some of the details there can be all sorts of art. From the "S" shape razor blade that took two days for the guy to cut on the mill and then grind down, or the robot gripper finger that picks up the ID of this part and thye OD of that part to puts them on top of each otherinside a fixture. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.....

Or was that beauty is in the eye of the Beer Holder....

Jim, my grandpa was a cattle farmer. That was before losing the farm and becoming a miner for 30 years ... but I digress. Anyway the Old Man was once at the corral, and apparently one of the farmhands had pi$$ed him off (this was extremely easy to do and happened often) .... so he proceeded to shout the living daylights out of the soul ..... and mid-sentence, his dentures popped out and landed right in the middle of a fresh, steaming cowpie. Not about to let this menial twist of fate ruin his perfectly good tirade, my dear sweet grandpa picked them up, wiped them on his shirt and put them back in-place, still firing off his barrage of orders and miscellaneous swearwords .....

My point? Even the very brown 928 Jim .... even that old girl has perfect leather armrests.

Heinrich

I think when he said that the controversy about whether the engine is art or not being lost on this forum meant something more like:
I think we'd all agree that engines are art, but convincing someone else....
or:
I know I'm preaching to the choir regarding the 928 engine as a piece of art...
or I might be completely wrong. But I'll disagree about spelling and what it says about the writer. Granted it may not reflect intelligence per se, but it does reflect how diligent and consciensous a person is. And no I didn't have to spellcheck consciensous.
