I'm the one that looked at the car. Kaz's main concern is the paint in the pics. The paint matches all the way around and is quite glossy. The motor ran very well without any ticks or such. The underside of the car was dry without leaks. I didn't see any dings or creases in the body. The tires were in very good condition as were the wheels. They moved from Idaho to Rochester, NY a few years back and drove the car here without issue. The owners manual had the dealer stamps on the different oil change/inspection boxes. The seats have wear but no tears/rips. There was a aftermarket stereo but it worked fine. I didn't hear any rattles or funny noises, the brakes looked and felt good. For the price I think its a very good car. The TB/WP was done withn the last 1000 miles so the only thing I recomend is having the owner get the TB tensioned before driving it home.

One mans junk is anothers teasure, yes. I would look at the car yourself. You can rent a car and drive back home for about $60 if its not what you expect. The owners are very nice people. He's 81 and always had an XKE, he just doesn't get the chance to drive the 928 anymore.

Any questions about what else I saw?

If it were I, I'd buy the car based on what Curt says. Despite the fact that he can't spell "speedometer"

Rochester??
If you don't want it, let us know where it is. I'm sure someone here from western NY could give it a good home. (Sadly, not me, I'm Porsche poor at the moment)

Let me stick my nose in here...

Heck Curt, is the car currently on the road? Do you have a regular mechanic? Would he look it over for Kaz?

And since I'm volunteering you for work... Saturday morning is good for me, if you would rake my lawn, too.

Funny thing, the car is currently registered and on the road. The mechanic they took it to is a family friend who charges a lot more then my mechanic (close to $80 an hour whiles mines at $69 an hour). He and my father were buddies when they were in thier 20's-30's. My father jokes with him that I was named after him. Curt and Kurt. He's a very good mechanic, even wears white gloves. He wouldn't pass me for an inspection till I had a steering rack boot replaced and on the car for him to see. Really nice guy. Although he's a 911 guy, he knows tons about all cars. He even teachs classes about rebuilding the 3.2L early '80s 911 motor, I think. He's been working as a mechanic for the last 30 years also. Anyway, I'm sure my mehanics could take a look at it if needed, but I really think that would be a waste of time and money. Just buy it and keep a $1500 buffer to take care of anything that may happen in the first few months. Besides, winter is almost here so it'll probably be put away for the winter, and then the tinkering can begin.

The thing to remember about pictures of cars is that you are looking at an object that is over fifteen feet long in a picture that is only a few inches. With such a reduction of scale, paintwork imperfections will never show up. It's certainly impossible to seel if the car has been repainted. Nor can you tell if there is minor damage to interior surfaces. A car may look stunning in a a picture, but be quite disappointing in the flesh. Nothing substitutes for a hands-on inspection.

If this Rennlister is a trusted & knowledgeable 928'er, I'd go for it. Remember the old saying . . . "You snooze you loose".

Don't trust the pics. They can be VERY misleading. If you can go see it for yourself but hurry.

I'd get the cash, fly out & drive the car myself....drive over to the mechanic and talk to him....make a decision and either drive home in my new 928 or back to the airport for a flight home!

Get a friend who is a reasonably good DIY mechanic to throw some tools in his car and go with you. Take the money for the car. When you get there, buy the car and drive back together, or turn it down and go home.

You and your friend get a road trip, you pay for his gas and food, and a cheap motel room if you don't like twenty-hour days...

Make it a challenge - No motels.

Find shark owners willing to put you up along your route. See more cars. Meet more people. Change their oil in exchange for room and board.
