Sharktoberfest: cheap wheels???
So I finally found the ET for my car, originally set at F65 and R52.
Did I see a cheap wheel offer in connection with Sharktoberfest? I can't find the thread anymore?
And while we are at it, is anybody unhappy about having fitted 18"ers on his shark? If I replace the stocks to go modern, it really should be modern and therefore 18" or even better 24" blingblings (just kiddin')
Note: no finders fee paid for the cheapo wheel thread, only a "thank you" sent!

I have 18" cup 2 wheels mounted on Gretch. I like them on back, but may revert back to 17" cup 2s on the nose. If you actually drive your car for more than "Sunday events" you will have to deal with the increased risk of bent rims. Before Gretch became a garage queen she was a "working girl" and carried out comuting chores for me. When I switched to the 17 inch cup 2 (GTS) wheels I received an introduction to "bent wheel" expense. Going to 18" wheels will only make it worse. I put the 18' on because the 17 cup 2l only came in a 9" width whereas the 18 cup 2 came in a 10" width.
It took me a year to find the 18" cup 2 wheels, they are out of production, originally made by milimeglia.

Once again I recommend the FRH Wheels at 928 INTL.

I don't see the 18" like I have. Mine are 245/40/18 et65 fronts and 265/35/18 et52 rears I've finally confirmed. Not easy to get exactly right.

cheapo wheels
Mark,
Thank YOU! Exactly what I was looking for. Disappointed though that they are 17"
Gretch,
I understand what you're saying, but where do you get your rims dented?
Unless you have a Cayenne, there is no reason to go off-road with a Porsche.
I have 22" on my daily driver without any problems. So do I miss something that I don't know about US driving consitions?

Stefan,
You will have to put ET65 on the rear, and ET52 on the front, if not the ET65 rim will hit the brake caliper. You could use a spacer of 6.5mm and clear the caliper. In any event, most 996 18 inch wheels come in ET65 Rear 18X10 and ET50 Front 18X8. I currently have a set of Carrera Lightweight wheels in that size with 295/30-18 Rear, and 235/40-18 Front. To make the 295 fit on the rear, you will need to use a 12mm spacer in the rear. A 285/30-18 tire will fit in the rear with a 6.5mm spacer and not touch..
My recommendation if you want to use stock 996 rims and not modify the fenders..

Richard,
I am very confused now!
You are telling me the exact opposite of what my studies brought up, namely they say ET65 in the front and ET52.3 in the rear?
Who is mixing what up, please?

Stefan,
I'll go out in the garage tonight and physically look at mine tonight. I could have sworn they had et65 on front and et52 in rear. I may have them backwards. I got so confused I finally asked Mark at 928Intl if he had any that he knew fit. I bought them off his open back car. I use no spacers. I really do think that the 18" wheels look better.

Stefan,
Okay, this is what Gretch sent out earlier. You do want the higher fitment in the front. Check out http://www.928registry.org/928-wheels.htm There is your answer!

The OEM 928 front wheels were generally of ET65 in either 7 or 7.5" widths, and 16" or 17" diameters - the 8x16 ET60 Club Sport being the exception.
Slightly less negative offset can be used on the front, and the suspension geometry is generally preserved to an ET55 on '86.5 and newer cars, ET49 on the earlier cars. Some successfully use ET50 on the S4, and do not get tramlining/ wander/loss of on-center feel/etc.
The wheel set you are referring to has the narrower rim intended for the front - and an ET52: the wider wheel (for the rear) would have the ET65.
This is the reverse of the OEM spec (so you are both correct). The front ET52 is pushing the limit of front end stability - but many happily use an ET50 on the front - I haven't , so cannot comment. The rear is effectively insensitive to ET - you just need enough ( or use spacers to help 'center' the rear tires to keep them from rubbing throughout their vertical travel.
In my case, a set of 993 wheels of 7 & 9x17, ET55 all 'round were chosen for a S4 to assure enough operating sidewall for rim protection (225/45 and 255/40 will be the tire sizes: There is no doubt that 18s look great - in my environment, I elected not to 'soft pedal' my fun driving enough to protect them, so choose 17s.

OKOK I'm exaggerating, But the quality of the roads here is nowhere near what you see in Switzerland. Be prepared!
I have the 17" wheels and think they are a good compromise.
