ZP -
THey are 2 very different beasts....
BUT - Should you decide to get a 928, there is something MUCH more important then "fully loaded"...and that is "FULLY MAINTAINED!!!"
MANY shark buyers sink another $5000+ in thier new acquisitions just in 'catch-up' maintenance.
A FULL PPI is a requirement.
Poke around some recent posts here...there are some interesting insights and stories...Also read the "new user FAQ" in the top posts. Look for the recent POLL on maintenance costs!!

the 944 is due for a timing belt and the 928 just had recent sevice and has been well mantained yes I already read that post and thats not too bad if you include the tires in that over $1500 I wont be racing mine and I will be doing all the labor myself. how much more will a 928 well mantained cost to keep on the road?? Than my 944 which needs a timing belt despertly ( I think its still the stock one no records of it being replaced and I have oil changes from 1986 so I think I would have a timing belt in there)

If you have a ton of extra useless cash lying around, go for it.

Nearly first car? Stay with the 944 for a year or 2.

Sharkbait, Is your car one that was sold on ebay several months ago? Just wondering since I had been bidding on it.

Back ot. A 928 can cost a little more to maintain and a euro will have it's own special quirks. A 944 gets better mileage also. You just need to realize it will likely coast you a little more to own and drive a shark rather than a 944. If your wallet can swing it, go for it!

Do what makes you happy. Yes, the 928 may cost more. That's heavy on the "may." Be ready to drop multi-thousands either way. A tranny or belt failure and there goes $$$.

Got both. Like both.

My question is how could you afford the insurance let alone the maintenance costs of a 928. I just added up my costs last night for my car and it came to a little over 2k a year for maintentance. Insurance for a guy your age would have to be 5k or more.

I've had both a 928 and a few 944's and the 928 cost me more than twice in driving and maintenance costs.

It's no fun having a supercar and not being able to drive it, more fun to have a 944 and learn how to drive. A 928 is just as fun as a 944, it just eats road and money faster..

I would think insurance for a 15 year old would be nearly unobtainable since I would think you need a drivers license ............ ?? Also the comment..".. I will be doing all the labor myself " brings up the question of what repairs" labor "have you done on the 944 or any car ? In my opinion, the 928 is perhaps NOT the best car to start doing your own repairs and labor. Driving ANY 20 year old car even a Porsche as your daily driver puts a lot of pressure on you to fix it quickly if it is your only means of transportation. The 944 is simpler and less expensive to drive , parts are less money many being V W Audi.

well, that is a good offer on the NA and I would say go for it. Something I found with my first car, it is nice to have a car that is cosmeticlly a little rough; as when you eventually hit something (you will, may just be a shopping cart but you will hit something) it doesnt matter so much. Also, your classmates are much less likely to mess with the car out of envy if it has some roughness to it. A classmate of mine in HS had an audi TT, and we messed with his car unmercifully.
My advice would be to sell the NA (thats a price you dont see often) and if you wanna stay with a porsche, get a mechanically sound but rough one. (944 or 928)

Abby,
Yes I got mine on ebay in August. For the life of me, I still cannot find my paint code anywhere in any listing. 80R 9 3 Black Cherry Pearlmist Metallic.

I really liked the color combination of that car. At least it went to a good home, and I found another 86.5 a couple months later.

I bought my 944S when I was 18 in 1996 - paid $250 per month for full coverage. Per my agent, 16-19 made no difference for insurance.
It's been "laid up" with a thrown rod bearing since 2001. From 1996 - 2001 that car cost me over $10,000 in repairs - nothing out of the ordinary for a 16V 944. During that time I put 25,000 miles on it.

944's are not cheap either.
