So, can anyone tell what year/ratio they are? And what would be the advantage gained with their replacement.? 1982 928S 5-speed.

Ratio? These gears have nothing to do with the pinion and ring gear ratios. Only replace these gears if yours are excessively worn or broken. Although he quotes $500 from Porsche, you can get an entire open (not LSD) differential in very good used condition for $200. The needle bearing design is from an early car. In 89 the needle cage design changed to include a part of the spacer on each cage, although the differentials are interchangeable.
My spider gears have apparently excess play on the shafts (I have observed the gears rocking on inspection), giving me a clunk going from reverse to forward and vice versa. I don't know if it is the gears, the shaft or the needle bearings. It has not changed in the 4 years I have owned the car or I might be interested in these gears at the right price.
