What does 26 year old gas do to the fuel system
Sending unit and strainer from inside the tank.........
Hope this isn't a sign of things to come! Well, if it is..... it'll just have to be fixed!

Even with only 1400 miles you have a lot of catching up do do.

The car would have only seen what 4 tankfuls of fuel !! the 36 MM screw in screen filter is no longer made only the 37 mm size hole for the pump or filter used on all 928s after vin # 928 820 0053

That is exactly how my fuel level sender and strainer looked in my 81. The car sat for about 10 years with the gas in it. When I got it running, the fuel meter was stuck on 3/4 tank. So, I assume thats how much gas was in it that entire time. The injectors were clogged pretty badly, had to send them off to be cleaned.

Carl,
That's what I'm finding out. Frustrating sometimes. BTW, did you get my email?
Jim,
Mark found the replacement part in stock. Had to be one of the last ones available anywhere. It's now on its way to NC.
Chris,
My guage was stuck on half a tank. Have a new sending unit ordered too. It's only available from Germany. Let's hope it shows up!
Brendan,
You're correct but, this is stuff I'd rather not be spending my money on.......

You know, I was thinking about that gunk too - how to remove it.
I don't have a solution, but I was expecting there to be a problem - as the tank is plastic - you can't go too caustic.

Chuck: I got your email. I find I am really starting to appreciate and love my O.B. the more I drive it. The key word is DRIVE. All work and no play...you know how that ends. My "W" is actually a beautiful driving car that does everything really well and smooth. Driving gives me another perspective to appreciate the 928 besides the automotive and mechanical art that it is.
Chuck...you still need a daily beater (928 GT with 100k miles) that can be driven without concern for milage. Surely you can come up with a logical-sounding reason for another 928, everyone here would help!

I hope you don't miss SITM to get married.....You should do the deed AT SITM in front of all the people who understand you best...the 928ers. And then drive off with "just married" on the back of the 928 with tin cans dragging. That would be a sight. Maybe peer pressure will get your plans changed. Dave Roberts as best man? Or Wally?

A possible method for cleaning the inside of the tank.....
(caveat: i've used this on old motorcycle tanks, they are a lot smaller and generally steel.. principles should apply though)
For a motorcycle tank, you get some small pea gravel. round stuff... bigger than aquarium gravel but smaller than that red-painted stuff they sell for potting (that will work, but leaves a sandy mess...)
Fill the tank about 1/4 full of gasoline, or better diesel... (no explosive vapors..) then put some gravel in the tank. maybe 1/2 as much by volume as diesel.
Then, put the tank in the trunk of your car and just drive as you normally would, go to work, the store etc... every day turn the tank in your trunk over, so that a new portion of the interior is getting abraded by the gravel/diesel combo.
You'll have to get rid of the diesel afterwards (oil recycling station works well..), as well as the gravel. You end up with a nicely burnished tank-interior.
Now... how will this work with a plastic tank, or more exactly a 928 tank? I have no idea... but perhaps the principles can be applied.. use a lighter gravel and only a few hours of swishing around..
Also note that the smaller the gravel, the less 'swishing' action, but the better it will fit into tight areas around sumps, petcocks or whatever other obstructions are inside the tank (on motorbike tanks this is usually the petcock valve and/or the reserve pipe)

Carl,
That draws quite the picture for me! Somehow I don't see my parents and family on Grand Father Mt hangin with a bunch of 928 nuts quite gets it for Tina let alone tin cans tied to one of the 928s. Unfortunately the date for our wedding was set 12 years ago (its our anniversary and Tina says she doesn't want me to have to remember two dates as I have trouble with just one!), Far as I know, SITM date wasn't set until a couple months ago. Probably would be easier for DR and Jeannie to change their date. :-(
scirocco,
Interesting suggestion. I would be worried about not getting all the rocks out of the tank.
