Default speed GT world Challenge 2004 Laguna race report (kibort )

Many of you have heard the results, but I thought Id give a quick report.

weekend started out pretty well, running one of my faster times in a year in both of the first 2 practices. (1:41.5/1:41.0 compared to 1:41.9 qual tim last season in 2003 and a personal best of 1:40.2 hoosiers/1:40.8 toyos) Now, it was time to up the performance to make sure i was in, as I only had .1 of a second to spare if the top 3 times of the million dollar teams didnt improve. well they did, but not by much. now, i was out by .150 seconds.
during Qualifying, i was off a 1:41.2 lap, and now going for a flyer, and i come down the main straight, 6300rpm, shift into 4th and i feel huge vibration and no power. roll 4 turns to run off the track and get to my pit where we pull all the plugs ( and find one cylinder bank at 120psi and the rest at 1:85ish) I guess good news, pointing that its probably a cam belt slip, but im thinking its that ole cam chain sprocket tooth issue(time bomb) anyway, retime it and it starts!!!!!!! now, some fast talking gets me in the show due to my track record, mechanical issue, and some luck. (heck, only .150 seconds!!) too bad too, because part of my goaals of these events is to get a good time too!

Race day: the lights go out on our standing start and poor derek Bell gets into it with a vet and almost flips on its side. a few more cars spin and have contact, caution for 4 laps, now we go green. i try and hang, but the slowest guys now are 1:38-9s now, and i pass one viper who is smoking and the rest of the field starts to pull away. trying to get as many fast laps as I can before i start redlining the engine.(our goal now was to finish, with the unknown cause of the timing belt slip) just after the halfway mark, we decide to go all out as our times are 1:41.2, i get the ole meat ball flag. im on a pretty hot lap, but the 2 leaders are coming up fast. i point them by near the corkscrew and tuck in til turn 11. then , they are gone and Im in the hot pits. Oil dipstick came loose and was smoking and dripping just a little. because of the championships on the line, they decide to keep me in the pits a while even though ive fixed the issue. we decide to call it.
Meanwile: anderson is giving Stu Hayner a battle and has passed him, but has a hood coming up, and the SCCA folks after many laps, pull him in for a fix. he goes back out only loosing 2 of the positions he had passed earlier . (groom and hayner) and goes on to finish a pretty respectable 18th. he looked great from the hot pits running away slightly from Stu in the pontiac GTO. ($300k car and lots of support!!!) out of 34 cars starting the weekend, I think his finish was pretty specactular and im even happy with my 26th finish, even though it would have been 22nd had I gone back out after my pitstop.

Lots of fun. Many thanks to Chris Young, Bruce matesso, and our Rich A. for all the help in the paddock getting that belt and cam timing back!!!! I think we had it running in less than 1.5 hours. (tell that to your mechanic next time he wants to charge you $500 for a timing belt change!! (just kidding). sure was a ton of fun to have the 928 team out there helping out and giving support.

all for now. now its time to plan for next season. ITE scca? no more pro racing unless they bring the cars down to planet earth!! (or i put a 6-6.5 liter in my car!! I could use the 150 extra hp i bet!

Hey MK,

You're welcome for the help.... For a fellow shark pilot, no sweat.... Get a 6.5 liter in there, then you and Mark A can carve through the pack together....

Cheers,

Mark and Mark,

Great race.

You had several drive byes on camera.

I had wondered what happened to MA in the last lap or so. I thought he ran out of gas.
He was schooling that GTO
