Default Most undesirable 928 engine - cost ?

I presume the most undesireable of the 928 engines is the 80-83 USA 4.5l L jet engines (which is what I have). So I don't have to remove mine, what should I expect to pay for a complete engine to take apart and play with?

John,

The '83 had a 4.7-liter engine and had many upgrades from the earlier 4.5 liter motors. None of the 928 engines were bad, some were just better.

I'd bet you'd get an engine cheaper if you bought the whole car rather than buying one already removed.

your probably right on the whole car idea but storage is a problem. I've been watching ebay where on occasion you see the usa 4.5 version going cheap but nothing has been listed lately.

Much depends on how good the "extra engine" needs to be. What you intend to do with it and how complete it needs to be. An old dead core 4.5 has little value. A rebuildable core is more ...ETC. the link above is for a good used warranted replacement engine. Not exactly something to take apart for fun.

Jim - what do you guys get for a 83 - 86 short block that needs a rebuild - meaning cylinder walls are good, pistons are good (needs rings) crank & rods are good?

I know the 83-84 & 85-86 are not the same - what I do with this car will depend on what short block I can find for what price. I plan on doing a euro intake/head on whatever block I find for the right price.

Actually, I don't know what you consider a rebuildable core. I don't care if the cylinders are scored or if the pistons are good but otherwise, it should be an engine that could run if the compression were good.

In other words, no holed blocks, good crank, intact heads with all valve train (but the condition is not critical), ignition and injection would be nice to have but not critical. Basically, a long block that needs a rebore & rebuild.

My intent would be to dissassemble the engine and attempt some unorthodox rebuild modifications without worrying about ruining my engine.

Hi john, this is Rick, we met at the Sekonk get together. I like my 82 so much that I did have the motor pulled by Randolph Racing in Stoughton MA. They did the head valves rear axle seals, every gasket possible etc etc. It cost me just under $7,000 To me it was worth it, not to everybody. Im in Mexico now but will be home thusday if you have any questions..

Hi Rick!

your car is beautiful and well worth preserving. My engine still runs fine but it being lowliest powered of the bunch, I've had some hair brained ideas that I'd like to investgate without killing mine in the process.

John V.- we met in Seekonk also. You should rebuild the syncros and just enjoy it for what it is. And drive it to frenzy the end of this month. I bet a lot of people would be interested in how you lowered your seat rails. You have a great car, maybe you need to drive it more than on short trips.

John et al;

I have three 85-86 long blocks sitting here taking up valuable space. One w/ iffy leakdown (supposedly a 56K mile motor, intakes off) and an 86.5 motor w/ about 30 crooked valves, complete. If you don't find what your looking for give me a shout, I may like to part w/ at least one of them.

Carl,

I've been driving it alot lately. Thats why I don't want to tear it apart. I hope to tackle the syncros over the winter but that hasn't stopped me from driving her. What and where is this frenzy happening?

Your not suggesting that I should just accept what I have and not push the envelope are you?

Scott, I may hit you up in the future. For now, I was really hoping to see what, if anything could be done to the L-jet 4.5. I figured those cores would be a dime a dozen.

Most undesirable to me would be a 4-valve engine with a broken timing belt. Ouch!
