I was probing around my fuse panel trying to find where the positive line comes in from the battery to tap into (radar detector). So if you can help with that, awesome.
Anyway, I find these two wires tucked down behing the panel with inline fuses in them. I remove a black bock with VDO on it to see where they go. I tested them, both have a constant current. They look factory only because they go into the factory wiring harness.
Here are some pics:

Wow, 15 minutes and no answer. Did I stump the room?

That's obviously your 81... I don't have any such wires, but one clue might be to look at what else that VDO box connects to. Look at the 928 Specialists fuse chart for your car... couldn't you just tap into the unused fuse #13? Here is the way my PO had his radar detector powered(the wire I'm holding):

Shark - holy sh*t, what a rats nest you got there. As far as the "empty" location you speek of - that should work. These wires stumped me so I didn't look any furthur.
I'll take out the fuses and see if the central locks still work. These have nothing to do with the VDO box. I removed that because it was in the way for the picture of the harness where the wires were going.

It's not so bad. I've only added one wire, which isn't even shown in that pic. All you have to do is pop the lower wood cover off -- phillips driver in your case -- pull the two M6 bolts off the top of the panel, and you will be able to lift and rock the panel forward giving you almost the same view you see in the pic. Unless you prefer the braille method.

[Edit]yeah I missed the point about the VDO box...
