Rather than trying to adapt a radiator to your car, why not go to a good rad shop and have them build one?
I had one done for mine - 3" thick core, bigger oil coolers, etc, for under $400. (sorry Mark)

Stick with the '89 setup. My 90 with the low mounted oil cooler takes a lot of abuse. The mounting holes have hogged out a lot from hitting stuff. Yes, there's a shroud around the front, and no I didn't do it, it PO did. However, it looks like it'll get whacked by just about any 2X4, or tire chunk that's run over on the highway.
