Default Spot the mistake

HAHAHA .... So in referencing and marking my cam gears for 45deg, I was amazed to find that miraculously, between the time that I had set the crank to 45deg, and the time I had removed the covers, lo and behold, the engine had suddenly jumped back by about 15 degrees ... WTF??!!! Even worse, the cam gears didn't line up with the reference marks.

The answer is in the photo. Thanks so much Mr Previous Mechanic :P

If something can be put on two different ways ......someone will , Harmonic balancers are my favorite since the keyway is not at TDC when you flip over the balancer the numbers "move" .

Been there done that!!!! With my brother, years ago on his '83 928. This was after we rebuilt the heads due to a loosened timing belt (caused some valves to bend due to carbon build up). Amazingly after turning the engine over the valves did not bend (the combustion chamber was clean this time).

Since the engine was apart for a while, it took us a while (24hrs) to figure out what the problem was. It's amazing how simple the solution is at times.

I have taken my balancer off and cannot remember which way it goes on!

Orange painted face towards the front or towards the back?

Regards

Peter

Position it so that the numbers are the 'correct way up' when read facing the engine: For your S4, the 45 deg mark will be to the right of O/T.

Could you guys elaborate a bit more on whether or not the harmonic balancer is on the correct way and how to tell? My PO had a timing belt done and I want to check if this was installed correctly. Many thanks.

If you can stand in front of the engine and read it (not the Aus way ) then you're good to go. Garth describbed it, I think, well.

Another way to tell, is if you look and see "Sh" and other alien-like writing on there, you're likely the wrong way around. In that case, try climbing under the open hood, and reading from the other side. If it looks like alien writing now, you are still screwed.

No wait ... in the second instance, if you look and see alien writing you are golden. It's if it's the right way up at that point that you may as well give me the car because your valves are all bent and rods turned to swiss cheese, and crowns comressed 20:1.

That's what I thought. Thanks, heinrich.

Jim, What did you mean by numbers "moving?"

since the key way is NOT at OT (tdc) all the timing marks on the balancer are in the wrong place (move)when the balancer is put back on front to back.
