If it is leaking, it really does need to be rebuilt.
It probably needs some new gaskets.
At the same time, you can clean the fuel screens, in case they are clogged.
One idea is that it might have clogged screens, and because the CIS is such
high fuel pressure, it caused the distributor to leak, from the blockage...
Perhaps if you clean it out, and reseal it, it might work.
But it would probably be easier to just get a used one from a wrecked car, or junkyard, and swap it out...

If you can make it to Blacksburg, there is a small independent import garage here called Gabor's that does good work. I have seen a few 928s out front and many 914s, 924s, and 944s. That might be something to consider if replacing the fuel distributer doesn't solve the problem.

All the fuel distributors are the same. You need an understanding of CIS injection ,it operates and meters fuel based on fuel pressures. The warm up control pressure regulator is setting the mixture ALL the time and it is possible that the problem is the WARMUP regulator and not the fuel distributor but only by attaching two fuel pressure gauges and actually measuring system and control pressure can anyone determine the cause of your poor running condition. My guess is it is that it is the warmup regulator. At one point in time Bosche was rumored to have said 1/2 of all the core fuel distributors sent in for rebuilding were FINE !!! Mercedes ,VW, Volvo, 911 all used CIS for many years.
