Talking My kid is great

So yesterday I drove the 928 to work. The car is finally to the point where I can trust it to get there, start again, get back, not break down. So I'm feeling pretty good.

To my surprise my next door neighbor has an NSX parked in their driveway when I get home. They're retired, one of their kids-in-law owns it apprently. Bright Red.

I park the 928 in the garage and go and stare moodily at the NSX, reflecting sourly that it's the first car I've seen all day that could eat Sharky's lunch. And my little boy (8) comes over.

"Hi Daddy."
"Hi."
"is that car fast?"
"Yes."
"Is it faster than the Porsche?'
"Yes."
"Can it go around corners faster than the Porsche?"
"Yes."
He stares at the NSX for awhile.
"Daddy?"
"Yes?"
"I don't like this car. There's something wrong with it. It's just not as cool as a Porsche somehow. It looks too plasticy or something. Porsches are much cooler."

Great kid. I must be doing something right.

Thad,

I've had a couple of chances to compare my car to NSXs at the track and autocross. They are not faster than my car. Driving is important, but so far that's the comparison.

Then there is always the Cheese Head option...............I wonder how long the egg beater in the NSX would last with a blower on it.......

Gretch,

The NSX will last just like the Honda that it is, even with a blower. More than a few NSX'ers are running forced induction scenarios (TT, centrifugal, believe there's a twin-screw as well).

Though they don't have the torque curve of a 928, they are quite capable of producing 400+ RWHP.

And they're damn fun to drive (IMHO). One of the interesting things about the NSX is the way the suspension is set-up, it eats a set of rears about every 5-8K miles. OUCH. It's even worse with more HP.

Most guys that I've met that have/had NSXs love(d) them, but the tire wear is an issue. And they are a cop-magnet like an F-car. Strong resale value so far, I doubt it'll ever go too low.

Maybe, but it is an arguement lost on me.........I am not even remotely tempted.

If someone gave me one, I would sell it, or maybe take it to the track and run the **** out of it, then toss it.

I do have respect for honda engines though.............

I'd take an NSX over ANYTHING I can currently afford. I can't afford an NSX, either! That car just looks so exotic AND it has the perfomance to go with it. C'mon, it is a rock-solid, DEPENDABLE, exotic car. I might rather have a 993TT, but that would be the only Porsche I'd want in lieu of the allmighty NSX! That is a SCHWEEET car! Now you got me thinking about it, I probably won't sleep tonight. Poor me, I WANNA NSX!

Gretch,

Don't get me wrong. I have driven a couple - and thoroughly enjoyed it - but I don't think I ever want to own one. Something about it's looks never struck me as 'right'. But that's just me.

Awesome kid!!! Smart too.

Actually, the NSX is a great car. My friend and co-worker has one. If I'd have the $ I'd like one. One big difference in my book though; 928 engine sounds much sweeter than the NSX.

You should get one then. Your post doesn't say what vehicles you have, but your avatar gives a clue, if that is your intention.....

While a very stylish sedan, with plenty of HP, my guess it that the NSX would substantially out perform your Jag in virtually every area (except the crash test).

All these high end cars are treasurers................to someone. I CAN certainly relate to the emotions they evoke in motorheads......

Gretch,
Yeah, different cars stir different souls, I guess. Ever since the NSX came out in '91, I was hooked. That car just got hold of me! In reality, my Jag will beat it 0-60 and in the 1/4 mile. The XJR is a really fast car. I couldn't touch an NSX (or a 928, 951 or probably any Porsche) in the twisties, though! aaron3 is right about the motor sound, the 928 sounds better than that Honda motor. I'd trade my Jag for an NSX any day! And I LOVE the Jag. That NSX just has a little sumpthin' that I NEED!!!!!

Well, an NXS (saw one two days ago.) is nice but it will always be a Japanese car. Nothing against them, my last car was one. (Mitus Eclipse) but you will not find the obsession with engineering details or cleverness that you'll find on a shark. because the Japanese are great at copy cat engineering and improving on existing designs. My Eclipse had what is essentially half a 928 motor (or a 944 motor) from a design perspective. It ran great, but even it popped a t-belt at 20K miles because they didn't have a good enough tensioner. (sound familiar? maybe they copy too well...)

Come to think of it, the Rx-8 is the most innovative Japanese car out now, but it's engine is a German deicing. What HAVE they done that is unique from and automotive engineering perspective.????

How many NSX's will be driven to work everyday 22 yrs from now? My shark is. Thaadds too. That says something. - Ruf

Thaddeus,
Good story. My 2.5 y/o son loves to go into the garage where my S4 ("Brucie" - inspired by his favorite Disney movie - Finding Nemo) resides. He always says "...Daddy...that's your Speed Racer car...your Porsche". Whenever I give him a choice to ride in the BMW e39 or the Porsche...he chooses the Porsche every time. Funny, eh?

While I like the NSX in many ways....it does not have the SOUL (the felt presence) that our German beasties have. Still, they are neat cars.

Cheers,
Tim
