Default Motor Mount Retrofit

Can I retrofit the newer style (round) motor mounts on a 1980, or do I have to swap out the front crossmember?

Cheers

I recently installed the "Ford" mounts in an S4, and jacked the engine off the mounts in an '80 (for a pan gasket), so I had all the exposure to the Xmembers one can handle for a while ....
Both the mount brackets and crossmembers are different. IIRC, the xmember changed to accept hydraulic mounts in '83-'84.( a quick check in PET5 would confirm).
FWIW, as good as the new mounts are in the S4, the solids w. mini shocks in my '80 seem to be just fine ..... except I need one 'new' mini shock ....

Just some motormount hats, and a "new" used crossmember are needed to retro. I think it makes it easier later on.

You will defintely need the newer style crossmember. I tried to put the new style motor mounts on a 1980 crossmember (even drilled the necessary holes) only to find that the oil pan would not clear the motor mounts. Had to remove everything, buy a newer crossmember, then re-install. Not hard to remove and replace crossmember, no big deal.

Rich.

Thanks for the advice. I think I'll look for a newer cross member.

Ken;

One begs to ask why??

If'n I recollect correctly, aren't the old style mounts way cheaper??? And last longer...

Old style mounts are still $145 each = $290 total. Ford mounts are $50 each=$100 plus new old crossmember at $50=$150. I was also assuming there was a reason Porsche went to the new style mounts - less NVH maybe?
