Default Chat with Derek Bell about his 928

I was at the ALMS yesterday in Elkhart Lake, WI and had the good fortune to meet Derek again.

I was surprised that - with a little prompting - he was able to remember our last conversation when he came down to Mark Anderson's pits at the Speed GT series in 2001. He was there to share 928 stories with Mark A, and my sons and I were just lending a hand in the pits that year.

I learned that, after the end of the move "le Mans" the Porsche factory gave him a 928 Special CS car in appreciation for his good work on the film driving the camera car.

I say "Special" CS because it was 1 of only 4 ever made, special Club Sport models with some very unique features. I believe there is a post somewhere on the Renn that describes the car very thoroughly.

Anyway - I asked him how the 928 was and he said that he did not have it anymore. He sold it to a museum/collector so it would be well cared for, and his street machine is a Ferrari now, (he told me the model, but I was steel reeling from shock and do not remember what he said) ...and said something about racing for Ferrari now and driving a POrsche was bad form, so he let it go to drive Ferarri on and off the track - more proper to your sponsor, you now.

Super guy, a pleasure to speak with, as all the ALMS drivers were.
