Default Do I need this cross member?

I noticed a cross member on the bottom of the car in the WSM that isn't on my '78. Looked under there and sure enough, there are mounting holes for it. Runs approximately under the bell housing. I imagine this adds quite a bit of stiffness and is as important as the cross brace under the hood? Maybe some protection from bottoming out? Anyone have a used one from a parts car, please PM me.

Don't know but I'll check both sHARKs at daylight.
Is this on the late model only?
BTW
That little trim/front bumper cover retainer -lift the hood- held in by five screws really stiffens things up as well.

hehe... I have the front trim splash guard but this looks like a serious structural element. It's on the early model. There's a good picture in the WSM Vol. 1 page 10-3 ("lower body brace").

Have seen it on early euros. As they are as bare as they get and have it so I'd say it safe to say should be there on all models.

Steve . . My brother Joe might have one. He just picked up a bunch of stuff we went halfies on. What until you see the list. I was drooling before he even finished reading me the list. All parts are off an 87 S4 with 37k. He said the parts look awesome.

Far out! I will PM you about the '87 parts. Here's what the x-member looks like on a '78.

Neither one of my GTs has that brace.
If it was just the '89, I might be thinking HOLY SHEIT, I gotta have that brace.

But, I've had the '91 since 24k miles. It was always correctly serviced as indicated by a pristine undertray with all fasteners present. So, I have to assume that if the PO's techs were thoughtful enough not to lose the undertray or any of its fasteners then they would have been careful enough to to lose a brace that size. Besides, up to the time that I bought the '91 it had not had a problem that would require removal of the brace shown had it been present - or so my service records back to dealer prep indicate.

Thus, I'm going cast my vote for 'not present on later models.'

Hopefully, Jim B, will jump in and tell us when that brace disappeared. I'm sure he's seen one or two...

I think the cross member was only on '78 and some '79 cars.

Without checking PET but thinking about it more I'd say it's on all cars where there are no cats. This would mean up to at least '89 S4's in some European countries.

Need to install PET again to this machine after HD crash. Interesting if they only included it to few cars after '79. Seems worthy addition to trackcars at least.

PET5 shows them on US and European cars 1978-82, but under remarks beside the part number it says "'78".

Uh, any of the racers or wreckers know if this can be added to stiffen things up a little more? Stiff is good.
