Ken,

The two bumps are where the brace bolts to the floor pans. There are two studs that stick out from the pan and the bolts go through the two little holes in the bottom of the brace with the arrows pointing straight up in the pic you attached.

Chuck Z,

I was actually referring to the 'channel' in the center of the brace.

The only thing I can guess is that it is a crash guide; ie. to direct the engine straight under the car in the event of a severe collision.

The later, smaller brace has a cutout on the front, and a corresponding 'hook' cast into the lower bellhousing.

Chuck,

How tough was it to remove? I'm going to just take mine off and powdercoat it black. Took a quick look, Looks like 4 bolts, 19mm?? The paint is just flaking right off.

Chuck,

Its really easy to get out. There are actually six bolts, the 4 you mention and then 2 13mm (I think) nuts that are fastened to studs that stick out of the floor pans. You can see the two holes in the brace in this picture:
