Unhappy Overheated Viscous Clutch

I note on a procedure to rebuild the viscous clutch for the cooling fan that over heating may/can/will ruin the clutch. Can someone explain just how that is so and what is considered overheating?

The refill procedure suggested using a heat gun or propane torch to heat the clutch to aid in getting the silicone liquid into the unit. If you are heating an aluminum unit with a propane torch and get careless, you can warp the clutch or burn the seals out.

Using a large syringe might be a better way to get the fluid into the clutch.

This did NOT say or imply that overheating the engine would damage the fan clutch.

Wally: Thanks for your reply. I used a heat gun to aid in filling the unit with 2 oz. of Toyota silicon oil. Since I have seen no improvement in the cooling while in stop and go traffic (overheats) I was afraid I may have overdone it with the gun and ruined the clutch.

The problem is definitely air flow as she will run fine all day except when as described above. The bi-metal strip warps accordingly and the pressure pin appears to be free. Perhaps a PO has burned the seals out as suggested.

Even with a full charge of silicon juice, the fan clutch can only do so much. Does the fan get much more resistant to turn by hand from cold to engine operating temp? Does the fan seem to spin at the belt speed at idle with a hot engine? - and move a lot of air?
If so, you may have another contributing cause to the lack of cooling - like a rad that needs flushing, or a condenser or rad front full of leaves and bugs ( they love to get between the condenser and rad). Just something to check, if not already done, prior to replacing the viscous clutch.

After failing to fix my viscous with a refill, I converted a LandRover viscous and fan to fo fit on the 928 shaft. If that fails, they are MUCH cheaper to buy than Porsche, and will just screw off the LHT nut fitting.

is there something i should know before i attempt to fill it ? i know mine needs a bit of that liquid , should i empty it first and put new stuff or just add what it takes ?and when will i know if full ?
I have many kind of syringes to do the job but i heard some tried to heat the clutch ?

If this link does not work search for "running a 928 without a thermostat.
Look for the link in Wally's post.
All the info you will need.
I went with the 08816-06001 as it is thicker oil.
Only bought it a couple of days ago so I know the number is current.
Good luck
