Cool Towing Question

Planning on towing my 928 by renting a Uhaul trailer...the kind you drive your car up on and strap down the tires. Was wondering what experience you've had in doing so. Will I need to extend the ramps with 2X6's, so as not to scrape the front air dam? Thoughts appreciated.

I know when our local 928 owner puts his on a trailer he backs his truck up on those Rhone ramps, guess does the same thing as the 2x4's.

They are big heavy trailers very solid but are high off the ground . By jacking up the tongue with the trailer hooked to the truck it reduces the angle of the ramp SOME but you still will need some wood to get more clearance . Sometimes you can use a sloping driveway to your advantage . You might consider removing the spoiler before loading rather than risk removing it while loading ! I have seen people back their 928 up on the trailer as well . If you jack up the front of your 928 just prior to loading it will give you additional ground clearance until it settles .

I towed my 928 from Calif. to N. Virginia last winter on one of those U-haul trailers. I didn't trust using wood for support for the trailer, so I just backed up the trailer to my driveway and drove the car straight on - the height of the curb was enough to change the slope of the ramp to give me just enough clearance to make it up. You could take off the front spoiler for added protection and more clearance too I suppose - I chose not too...

Backing it on could work as well, but the 928 is so wide I wanted to pull forward onto the trailer to make sure I got it on straight. Also, the drivers side fender of the trailer folds down to allow for the car door to be opened - the passenger side does not, and I didn't want to Dukes of Hazzard it in and out of the car :-)

What kind of vehicle are you using to tow? I used a Jeep Grand Cherokee, which really isn't a good vehicle...the wheelbase is too short. Keep in mind those trailers wheigh around 2100 lbs, and when you add the 928 at 3500+ lbs you have got nearly 3 tons of weight to pull around...

Best of luck!

Bill

I hauled my '85S 928 on a UHaul car hauler trailer had no problems, loading or unloading, tying it down, etc. Worked great as is. I guess there's a chance that some Uhaul trailers may be older ones or a different style than what I had but the one I used looked like it had hauled Sherman Tanks at one time. Pretty beat up...but my car compensated for the looks.

I'm towing with my 2001 BMW X5 rated at 6000 lbs. and 600 lbs. at the tongue. Has all wheel drive and an automatic horizontal stabilizer to compensate for rear end sagging...I hate when my rear end sags... Thanks for the advice as well as not to tell them I'm towing a 928.
