I got the 27mm socket and gave the ol shaft a couple of turns. For some reason, the Cam gears were way off. The belt looked good and it never jumped any teeth. After two turns though, the belt felt a little looser than before. I also heard a sweeping sound as I turned. Kinda like someone sweeping the floor. I think the belt was rubbing on something. Is this normal???? The engine ran rough before I took it apart. Could it be because the timing was off? (Cam gears off?)

Sounds like you might have a bad bearing on the tensioner? In any case, it does sound like time to open 'er up and have a look. How far off is "way off"?

I sure wouldn't be hitting the starter any time soon! As O&N says, at least get the two top front covers off to see what's going on as you rotate the crank.
