Just clarifying because either that was a typo or I have a LOT to learn about fighting tickets.
Extremely poor wording. Driving faster than the posted speed limit is presumptively unreasonable.

Thanks.

Ah, thanks. I thought you might have some super ticket-fightin' voodoo up your sleeve.

Ironically, I was pulled over today - first time in 14 years... 119 in a temporary 70 zone. I did slow down to 70, but according to the officer I missed the first sign and didn't slow down until the second one appeared.

I always slow down in temporary zones as they are usually there for a reason (road construction). Sucks to be taken breaking a limit I actually believe in, but that's life I guess.

Worst thing is the sucker was on my tail for at least 30km doing 160 in a 110 zone. In a friggin Golf. Talk about being irresponsible. (saw him, didn't figure cops were allowed to do that without lights'n'whistles, but I guess they - unlike the rest of us - are not dangerous above the speed limit. Can you spell BS).

I always think that is a little odd, that they consider your speed unsafe, and yet they think it is "safe" for them to go even faster, to catch you... I'm sure it's because of their "training". But still, I doubt their cars were made for it, like ours are. But then again, that's probably why they think it is unsafe. Because they have never been in a car meant for those speeds.

Rob,

I'm not an attorney, nor do I play one on television (but I have dated a few).

Even if you drive for a living and are "on the clock", tickets are non-deductable. At least, that's what they always tell me when I ask...

Also, you cannot write off last year's taxes as a bad investment. Same sort of reasoning(or lack thereof) applies, I believe.

Hmmm. What if you had a lawyer on retainer for business purposes, and he happened to represent you on a traffic ticket pro bono? The business expense would still be a business expense.

in CA we have/had a basic speed law, something about speeds being merely suggestions/recommendations based on AVERAGE conditions...if it's clear and empty, implication is that it's ok to go somewhat faster in certian areas....(not school zones of course, etc)... I remember muttering something about it when pulled over for speeding in mid 90's (1990's, speed was only 7 over) and was released after a vehicle inspection...(resulted in a ticket for no front plate, later dismissed)...

recently learned that driving blindfolded is only illegal in arkansas - either they're ahead of the game or so stupid they have to put a law on the books for it...hmmmm...

better watch it, homeland security might claim we're collaborating to undermine national security, since federal highways are involved and tickets help fund them....uh oh, their at my door now...gotta go...
Yes Alaska, Washington and Idaho share info back and forth. I found this out in '94 when I got a ticket in Spokane. I ended up paying the ticket and my insurance rate did indeed go up, way up. I was 24 then driving a '93 Cobra Mustang. Last year my wife was driving the same car and got a ticket in Yakima, she got the points on her Alaska licence and our insurance went up. So this year I get issued a ticket in a Porsche and think (seeing a trend here with the insurance companies) that it is worth paying $350 now then being bled dry by the insurance company for however long it takes to clear the points off my record.

Here is a link to the Driver's License Compact / Non Resident ViolatorCompact:

http://www.dui.com/whatsnew/driverlicensecompact.html

Forty-eight states belong either to an agreement called the "Driver's License Compact" or the "Non-Resident Violator Compact." (The only states that don't belong to one or the other are Michigan and Wisconsin.) When you get a ticket in one of these states, the department of motor vehicles will relay the information to your state -- and the violation will affect your driving record as if the ticket had been given at home.

In Oz, I got a ticket in the state of Queensland on a state of Tasmania Driver's Licence. (I was doing 80km in a 60km zone). I didn't pay it immediately, went back to Tassie, didn't hear any more about it, and eventually forgot about it... A year later, again in Qld., I got a notice of Suspension of Licence in the mail out of the blue. I was prohibited from driving on any Oz licecnce until such time as the debt was cleared. I cleared it online 6am the very next morning...

I understand they're serious about their speed laws in Oz. Not to mention DWI.

Ill coment on this, i sell insurance at my familys buisness going to be an agent one day. When you get a ticket for 15mph over the stated speed. Its 2-4 points on your insurance. This lasts for 3 years so your 150$ a month insurance will now be 200$ a month. Over 3 years thats 1800$ if not more in increased insurance rates. If you are unlucky and get another ticket and pay it again it goes up higher. A speeding ticket under 15mph is 1 point on your insurance about 20$ per month increase. 5mph or under it doesnt come up. It is better to pay a lawyer the 350$ than paying the tickets 150$ instead of taking your punishment. Also a 90mph in a 55mph can also be considered careless driving wich they will usually try and give you, this will be 4-6 poiints on your insurance it varys by company, yet another 3 years. 6 points on your insurance will be around 100$ increase per month. Thats 3600$ over the same 3 year period, who wouldnt rather pay a lawyer?

That makes perfect sense, Jack - but you did not factor in the option of going to traffic school in lieu of paying for an attorney. Traffic school is cheaper and yields the same benefit.

What am I missing?

Randy, traffic school is not an option in a lot of locals.

Up here in Canada I am only aware of one province that offers such a program, and that province only uses it to earn back 4 points for licensing purposes only (No use for insurance).

The best way to avoid a shark bite is not to swim

Cheers,
Mike
