What do we do for speakers?
My speakers are toasted.
I'm curious what people have done about speakers. I ask because first, they are intigrated with a special Porsche frame, and they are also 2 ohm speakers. I've never seen that before. Special speakers. Booooo. They also have special connectors. Yuck. I can custom fit newer speakers, if that's the only way to go.
There are so many posts in the archives, that I can't effectively go through them all. I'd like to know what others have done. This is one area where they made a bad design error.
After looking at it further, it appears that there's a special crossover that has to stay with the speaker. It looks like it's a custom job.

If you want to use the stock amp, recone or replace with stock.
If you want to use different amps, rewire and cut the two-ohm speakers out of the housing and glue the new speakers in.

Re: What do we do for speakers?
I will be replacing mine soon, so I've been watching what others have had luck with. Currently, I'm leaning toward MB Quarts.

Here's a link for your MY. The problem obviously is depth. If you were going all out, you could re-wire. I'm going to pull my interior anyway to redye the leather, so that's my option.

I could never get the new speakers i put in the back of mine to seal right. So i bought a 10inch JL audio sub and a 600watt alpine amp for the low end. I sold it though to put on my new exhaust. I also had a 250 watt amp running to the new speaker so i could hear the highs, blaupunkt 6.5s

Thanks guys.
I've decided to rebuild the speaker. I think the easiest way is to "refoam" them. Otherwise, it's just too much work. If I lived in my car, it would be a different story. And I'm no longer an audiophile. It's the music, not the speakers. So I'll see if anyone sells foam that I can goof around and try to retro onto the old speakers. It probably won't work, but it's worth a try. I'm not the industrious guy I used to be. Well, not on cars anyways.
Edit- First google I did came up with what's called "foam surrounds". Check this out, if anyone wants to try this, also.

Mike,
If GreggK passes, I'll consider buying the larger rear speakers if they're from a 1989 S4 or later...all 10 of mine are toast too.
I have been leaning toward MB Quarts as well. I believe worf928s4 (correct user name?) here on the board has done some EXTENSIVE research into this type of refit. GreggK, I'm interested in the refoaming job too.
Best,
Tim

Does anyone have ITT speakers in your shark?.
YES - ITT. They look like Kmart knock offs but sound decent and hold good power. I run a Piuoneer Super tuner w/45*4 watts and they haven't blown yet.
Just curious and TIA

Mike,
I don't know where I was dude...bummer. I have an 89 s4 and I believe the speakers in this MY are a little different than the 87-88 years. I know mine has the 10-speaker OEM system in it. Thanks for keeping my name on them until we can get this figured out.
Perhaps Wally knows....saw he was reading this thread too....you still out there Wally?

Oh yeah tuK-928. I replaced the stock speakers and now have Mbs in my car . Satisfying upgrade ,not their most expensive line ,but well worth it. In the doors I have DKD110. Those are the coaxials with titanium tweeter. The stock tweeter is not connected it would be treble overkill. Large speakers I don't know the model # off hand. Must of thrown the box away, but I will get it for you if you'd like. My stereo is a blaupunkt sanfrancisco- very happy with it. They say 45 watts per channel, of course thats peak! If you don't do any loud listening -it supplies more than enough clear decibles. Check out -ZEBS- I'm acheap guy and I really research prices. They had the best deals! See-ya.

Mike,
Thanks for the info on what you installed - DKD110. I've heard good things from folks in this group who have gone with the MB-Quarts. I'd prefer not to have to rewire a bunch of stuff....just want to drop in the new speakers and be done with it if that is possible. Why are the MB-Qs so popular with 928ers? Is it sound quality alone or something to do with the operating specifications of the speakers themselves (e.g., nominal impendance)?
Thanks one and all,
Tim

Hi tuk-928. As pewter 82 said MBqs' Crisp ,clean, powerful sound. MBQs' speakers prices run from the lower midrange to the high end. They do not manufacture junk!-Not even the least expensive line! The only downfall with their speakers are that they are not very efficient speakers. If you like your music louder than usual and wish to feel it as well, too totally get involved with what your listening to you will need some more amplification than just a good head unit . I listen to DURAN DURAN to Mozart but not at high levels and my mbqs, with my headunit and no outside amplification is very enjoyable.. Once again for the best deals look at ZEBS! BTW -the speakers are made in Germany.

The stock 6.5" rear speakers provide lower bass than any drop-in (or cobble-in) replacement I have tried. So, anything you use will require a sub supplement. If someone thinks otherwise, clue me into the the speakers that you found to provide solid bass.
