On the advise of Jay Kempf, i bought (4) Clarion 2-way 4x6 plate speakers for my OB. Now that my passenger side window regulator is toast i can finally set about the task of replacing them. I long ago replaced the head unit, installed a Bazooka tube and rewired all the stock speakers. The door sill fader **** is now just a decoration.

Not quite. Drop the 's4' and you've got it

here on the board has done some EXTENSIVE research into this type of refit.
Extensive only to the extent that I spent many hours doing searches on this site - leading to other places - and looking at manufacturers specs. Rather than try to be "different" and end up wrestling with minor problems at install-time I went with recommendations of folks here coupled with my own research. I'm going with the one-step-below-top-of-the-line MB Quarts (PCE series if memory serves.) The make-my-wallet-cry-in-pain MBQ's would have been $2k even at near-wholesale prices. Rediculous.

We'll see just how extensive and appropriate my research was in about two weeks.

Tim,

(I'm posting this here, because your message box is full, and it wouldn't let me post there.)

I'm really just waiting to see what the response is from the speaker rebuilders. I am quite certain that I can repair mine. But that is only if I can locate the surround foam. Shouldn't be a problem, I think. If I can do that, then I'd save the loss of yet another 928 rarity. And we'd both get speakers. Otherwise, I'll see if Mike's can work in my model. Thanks for the message, by the way. That's really kind of you. It's a pretty oddball part.

Enjoy,
Gregg

Hi Gregg,

Sorry about the full PM box...a constant problem for me, I'm afraid.
Probably better to email me directly - see the profile page for my user ID and select the email option.

Good luck with the refoaming project! I believe Mike (MPesik) will hold on to the speakers until we learn what works out best for you. Whattaya say Mike? At any rate, my needs are secondary here but would be intrested in Mike's rear speakers IF you end up not needing them. Have fun and consider doing a photo documentation of your refoaming project for the rest of us

worf928 (Dave C),
Thanks for jogging my memory re: your ID. Glad you have made significant headway on your speaker project. I'm looking forward to learning how you make out with the MBQs. I'm going to be looking for mid-line MBQs for my car...high-dollar stuff isn't worth it to me right now.

Cheers,
Tim

I have decided to use wood and leather to mount 3-way CDT Audio sytem in the door and two fils in the rear. Attached show mid-base support ring wrapped in leather (another ring is mounted to the frame - top ring has larger OD and provides seal over door panel). Mid-range picture shows 4" CDT Audo speaker mouted in the door panel). I have used a lot of Dynamat Extreme on the door frame and inside of the door panel. System schematic and links to all componnets are at my still leaving a lot to be desired site http://members.***.net/my_1987s4_928_a/index1.html

I personally hate anything that doesn't look stock. But that doesn't neccesarily mean you can't upgrade speakers and still retain the original covers. My '94 GTS was very, very professionally done with upgraded MB Quart speakers that were adapted into the original housings. You could never tell the difference, with the exception of the sound!

An Alpine multi-media head unit with navigation has been installed up front with an Alpine amp, navigation DVD player, and an XM satellite radio box descreetly hidden under a stealth black cover under the hatch cover that fits exactly to contours of the rear hatch. It only stands about two inches in heigth and takes up less than half of the rear hatch. The original CD carpeted CD changer cover is still there, but filled with a top of the line Alpine CD changer.

The sound is incredible and looks entirely stock. Thats what's important to me. I'd go with MB Quart speakers and the stereo equipment in Alpine.

Good luck!

I found speakers that fit the cut outs, even the small tweeter at Simply speakers. check their web site.

In my 1990 GT, I installed Rockford Fosgate Component speakers, a New Blau head unit, and a large Alpine Amp.

BTW, I have the entire factory stereo (minus the head unit) if anyone is intersted.

So knowing nothing about stereo systems at all, why is it a problem replacing the 2ohm factory speakers with new products? As a matter of fact, that's what I did. I replaced the 2 door speakers
and the 2 rear speakers with new Blaupunkts (just to keep it looking original) and I used the factory mounting rings on the new speakers. It plays just fine with the factory amp I guess, sounds good enough to me with the RMB wailing and the sunroof open

What is happening when I use these 4 ohm speakers with the amp originally intended for 2 ohm?

Should I replace the amp? Urgh...... I'd rather change timing belts than try to figure out all this stereo mumbo jumbo.

If you replace a 2 ohm speaker with a 4 ohm speaker you have an impedance mismatch in the system. You don't get maximun power transfer to the speaker and you run the risk of burning up your amp due to heat and over current, however going from a 4 ohm to a 2 ohm system would be worse and if you've been running this way for a while you'll be fine.

Todays amps have no problem handling speakers with different OHM readings. A class AB amp will fit the bill just fine. As long as your hearing isnt so bad that if someone fired a shotgun over your head and you didn't flinch at all. Mike.

Hi Guys,

Although I have replaced my amp and headunit, I used Infinity Kappas that you can get at circuit city etc. I replaced the stock speakers (4 coax front & rear) and mounted them in the stock locations. The rears are behind the stock grills, and no one can ell except by looking really closely at the titanium domed tweeters behind the grills...

I do not use a sub woofer, as I am getting older to the point that I do not need that much bass.

However, I do listen to a wide spectrum of music, and I think the Nakamichi headunit and ADS amp help A LOT with sound quality.... In any event, the Infinity's sound great...!

MB Quart component speakers are the way to go, but adding a sub is needed. It gives you a more home sound system feel.
