I just read this in the July edition of the British magazine "CAR". The subject - the most performance you could buy for under $20,000.
'You won't meet one coming the other way. It has pop-up headlights and an absolutely massive V8 at the right end. The 928 is utterly unique.
European Car of the Year in 1978, the 928 still looks like the future, and a 165mph top speed, a 0-60 time of 5.5 seconds, and peak output of 320bhp are figures that haven't exactly aged badly. The handling is brilliantly neutral, with pretty much perfect weight-distribution, and it would be a revelation to drivers of older 911s, who could be moments from a major 'off' if they tried to do the same in their rear-engined Porsche.
For some the 928's steering may seem a trifle heavy, but it's still so precise. Pushing a 928 to the point of tyre squeal provokes only the slightest of slips, giving a friendly warning to back off a bit.
The 928 is a full-on supercar that behaves impeccably under everyday driving conditions. In the early nineties, all this over-engineering would have cost you $80,000, but now it's absolute peanuts. Yes, the 928 is well overdue for elevation to icon status.'

About the heavy steering: I've always thought the 928s steering was very precise - good heft so it's not jittery at high speed, still manageable at low speeds. Last week a buddy of mine drove it for the first time and his first comment was "Damn - the steering's a monster!" When we got some daylight and he floors it he goes "Ah, there we go, I get it now." His wife was in the car with him for a ride and said he had this evil laugh the entire trip. She was looking at me accusingly - I think their kids' college funds are in danger...
