Default OCIC Reflections

The weekend was a blast!
We got to Sand Springs abour 8:00 PM and finally found the motel after a tour of the "greater metropolitan" area thanks to Mapquest. We met up with a bunch of pork sucking 928ers at the Rib Crib and shot the bull and gawked at cars till bed time.
Wake up was at O Dark Thirty and we headed out to the track.
My instructor was an extremely experienced racer whose name I can't remember for the life of me (CRAFT-----comes after CRS) and I was shown the fast way around the track and encouraged and instructed when I missed an apex or blew a turn.
About 11:00 the weather turned nasty and we experienced a true frog strangler with shifting winds and lotsa temperature changes. I thought we might get to Kansas the way Toto got to Oz, but it let up around 1:30 and everyone got lots of track time. I was delighted with the car and pleased with my own performance.
We arrived in Wichita around 7:00 IIRC and proceded to check in and wash the cars. James and I discovered that things worked well as long as I did the tops and he did the bottoms. Each one of us washed a total of one car and got to work on our most efficient areas. I "drove" James' 92 GTS over to the vacuum cleaner for him.
I got lost on the way to the exhibition hall and managed to screw up a rear wheel on a concrete ramp I shouldn't have been on in the first place.
If you look at the picture of Marc White in his "ventillated" shorts you can see what I did when I got back to the reception. He was very patient and gracious while I was chewing and allowed as how a map might have been useful for those of us who were exhausted and moderately disfunctional after a long day of driving and tracking.
The reception was great and was capped off, for me, by Nicole's arrival. She's just as sweet and bright as I imagined. Michael asked me to drive his 92 GTS to the exhbition hall for him since he'd had a couple of drinks and is meticulous about drinking and driving. As a consequence I got to "drive" both of the 92 928s in the US in one day! So far it's my best claim to fame!
The door prizes were fun, but I didn't get the new belly pan I wanted. Musta been rigged!!
The awards were "interesting" and the judging was esoteric at best and followed some arcane set of parameters that still has some of us scratching our heads. What does "concours" mean? I guess where 928s are concerned originality doesn't count. (I was not entered in either street or concours).
Pam and I had a long and extremely enjoyable dinner with Michael and Jae Schock and we will definitely be seeing them again.
Dyno day was very interesting especially after we found the place. (Do you sense a theme here?) Louie's car threw the belt on the dyno and exploded outside after the run. My GT dynoed right at 280HP, but only 263 ft/lb. From the curve it looks like I may have a leak in my flappy vacuum diaphragm. Once more into the intake dear friends!
The trip home was uneventful.
We met a whole bunch of great folks and saw some beautiful cars. Looking forward to the next get together.

Hi Ernest:

Thank you for your nice compliments! I'm so glad we finally go to meet - and even take pictures together! Now, I just wish it had not been as windy on that parking deck, and the sun in my eyes had not blinded me, and I'd have the body of a supermodel, and... Just kidding!

And from talking to Pam, I can see how - as you claim - she is the best thing that ever happened to you. Both of you are just wonderful, and I look forward to seeing you again! Maybe you'll come out to California for a vacation, and we'll organize a little fun drive for you!

Hey Heinrich,
I'll throw it right back atcha. I stood right next to Heinrich and didn't realize who he was!
We should have made arrangements to wear our Rennlist "handles" on special badges all weekend. It would have given us more reference points for recognizing each other.

They didn't provide name tags?

Seems that would have made it much easier to match the face to the forum name.

Randy,
They provided name tags, but we should have had Rennlist name tags with our Rennlist "handles" on them as well for people who are name retention challenged like me.
Which brings me to another point.
The 928 Owner's Club has a web site and some level of presence on the web, but the Rennlist is by far the most active site on the web for 928 owners. It seems to me that there should be some way that the two can interface that would be of benefit to all. We're too small a community to split our efforts. I have no idea how this would work and it's not my place to tell Marc White or anyone else what they should do, but I'll bet that the vast majority of the people at OCIC use the Rennlist more than the owner's club site and it's a shame that our owner's club doesn't get more participation.

Hey Jay,
Wish Pam and I could have spent more time with you and Micky (sp?).

Gosh, I don't think I met Todd - or did I? So many nice people, so little time...

Jay: Did you get both cars home without problems? Hope you had a great drive!

What a great event!
This weekend was an absolute blast. We expected to meet a lot of enthusiasts but our expectations were by far exceeded. Thank you again Nicole for the invitation in German! I hope to see everybody again soon!
Can't wait for the next event!
Ernie, Jae and I know a nice restaurant in Dallas too ;-)

Michael,
Once you've seen Wichita the rest of the world seems dull!
Just let us know when you're coming and we'll put down some fresh straw in the guest room.

Nicole: Yep, both cars home safe & sound! After the recharge, the A/C was great!

Good to meet up with you and the rest of the 928 gang...really good to be able to put faces with names. For those that click on the link above and go through the pics - I'm the guy with the handlebar mustache.
