Default Safely towing a 928

I can see that I'm going to need to tow my 928 soon. And it may be a recurring experience

What's a reasonable way to tow it for short distances around town? When I brought it home, I rented a full-length U-haul trailer, with ramps, and it was fine. But I don't want to do that if I don't have to.

Can I safely use one of Uhaul's two-wheel dolly's? I used to tow a VW with a fabricated tow-bar. Would anyone do that with a 928?

Flat towing is very hard on the geartrain. You are forcing the wheels to drive the gears rather than the other way around, this will contribute to excess wear on any gears that are in mesh, especially the ring and pinion as they weren't designed to rotate that way. There may also be oiling issues. Flat tow for a few miles maybe but remember the wear problems are cumulative. I wouldn't do it unless it was an emergency. The 2 wheel dolly is ok but you are only saving wear on the front wheel bearings unless you tow it backwards and it may not fit on the dolly that way.

with a manual trans in neutral there should be virtually no load on the gears train.

Excerpt from the 82 owner's manual,

I have a dolly and tow my 87 and 78 five speeds all the time, some over 300 miles to get special work, no issues. A/T might be different.

Thanks all! This is a 5-speed manual, so I think I would be good with a few miles on a dolly. Although I'm glad to know how to tow in an emergency, I don't think I'm ready to trust that eye-hook and someone's foot on the brakes.
