Question HVAC slider replacement question

Hello, I received a pair of new HVAC slider end pieces with clips today but I can't figure out how to put them on. Do I need to disassemble the head unit to remove the old clips or do I just pull real hard? One of them is already off (broken before I got the car) but I'm afraid to push too hard to put the new one on even though it looks like it should "pop" on? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Joel

Hi Joel,
I have similar issue on mine. Both of my sliders were broken but are still slightly attached to the head unit. I noticed the broken portions are stuck to the metal support, and unless the broken pieces are removed, the new sliders cannot be inserted to the metal support. I was told by folks at Parts Heaven to remove the entire unit from the dash in order to replace these sliders. Let me know how you finally fix them. Good luck!

I found this old post by Dr. Bob in searching the archives. (now I'm glad I didn't just pull hard...)
******************************************************

DO NOT just pull the slider ***** or the fan speed **** off of the controller. The sliders are illuminated with fiber optic filaments in black plastic sleeve, and pulling the ***** will brek the fiber stratnds.

The panel itself pulls out after you remove the center A/C vent, and that H-shaped trim that surrounds the controller. The vent pulls out easily if you use a hook fashioned from a piece of coathanger wire, with the vents in the center and the flap lever in the open position. The H trim gets pushed in slightly from the sides so that the arms will come out of the edges of the console trim. The trim is less than $10 from 928 Int'l, by the way. Don't ask how I know...

There are two electrical connectors to the controller, one flat-edge connector at the rear of the controller (towards the FRONT of the car) on the left side. The blower fan connections are made through a pin connector on the left side near the front of the controller (towards the REAR of the car). These connectors can be accessed with the left side console cover removed.

The controller has a couple screws that hold the casing together, and a bunch of little plastic tabs that link the top and bottom covers. These tabs pry back with a tiny screwdriver, one at a time, as you gently pull the plastic shell halves apart.

Once the covers are off, you'll see how the fiber optic is routed around the posts and the levers inside. The fibers route to the sliders, the panel face, and the little fan number indicator next to the ****.

When you put the clamshell covers back on, be sure to put the fibers in there so that normal movement of the slider and ***** does not stretch the fiber around the screw posts. You'll see what I mean when the covers are off.
