Sorry guys but an advertisement. KLA Industries is now able to offer Power steering rack reseal kits for the 928 1980 to 1990. My 951 has one of these types of kits and I love it. They can be seen at klaindustries.net

Once the shaft is separated from the sides this is easy as pie - as long as the actual METAL wear does not interfere. I guess Griffiths has some notions on metal polishing and crack testing.

I have a right hand drive GT will these seal work on my steering rack?
I am not sure if the steering rack on right hand drives are the same as left hand drive 928's.

Guys-
We don't provide instructions because we do recommend a professional install the kit. A professional may see other issues that will effect the sealing of the rack such as pitting on the shafts.

100% with you FL. Didn't pay much attention to this earlier b/c they only go up to MY90 (my rack, unlike my car, is GTS). But, since somebody brought up instructions...
Anybody who rebuilds racks for a living has access to the ZF seal kits. Anybody who does their homework can buy this stuff. What could the point possibly be of buying aftermarket what a tech shop already has?
BTW - Most of the "rebuilt" racks out there have been re-sealed, cleaned and that's about it. There are also those who completely take them down and redo everything. Try to buy the the latter, unless the former comes with a good warranty.

Well, I have tried to find the ZF kits, and they seem to be sourced through transtec. www.transtec.com I am under the impression that this is the kit used by the people who rebuild these units. I need correction if I am wrong.
I've done this on two separate racks. First one worked fine, and the second has not been installed. I'm not sure I would call what was mentioned above to start the thread "aftermarket"

My 1984 rack looks like new, does not leal but there is play on the right hand side. I have taken the rack off and there is over 1mm of radial play between shaft and housing. I can't understand why it doesn't leak. Any ideas.

From my research, ZF no longer sells the rebuild kits over-the-counter. They do refer you to "authorized" ZF service centers, so either they are supplying them to these sources...or the parts are available from some source to do this. Some issue with liability on ZF's part, as I understand it.
Transtec services the rebuild industry for tranmissions and the like, so they picked up the opportunity that ZF dropped. Who knows, maybe Transtec was/is making the seal kit for ZF as an OEM!!!. Either way, the kit is available for those interested in rebuilding a 928 rack.
While there is definitely a safety issue here, it is clear that leaky 928 racks are common...and probably a function of age as much as wear & tear. I'm awaiting a core rack to rebuild with a kit like the KLA or Transtec one over the winter. I plan to "practice" on the core rack...if it is not rebuildable or I screw it up, then I repeat the process (with lessons learned) on my current in-service rack. If the first one works out OK, then I will swap it for my current one. It seems doable to me...assuming that there is no significant wear/damage issues.

Extremely doable. I'm on my third right now. The seals from Transtec are sometimes a bit off, but they work.
