Default Gauge types Mech vs Elec

I see most gauges come one of two ways:

Electrical or mechanical.

My guess is electrical is better
Looking at boost and Oil, tranny and water temp.

Any BTDT, input.

DC dies/ AC lies. But you know that already!

Electrical gauges will always be more reliable. The only possible excemption that I can think of would be a boost gauge, who's inherent simplicity would render the comparison worthless.

I had a VW Rabbit that had a mechanical oil pressure gauge that I installed. It actually ran a plastic oil line into the gauge- it never leaked but I was always conscious of the possibilities that the tiny polyethylene tube presented!

I ended up buying a mechanical boost gauge and the oil ,water and tranny temps in electrical.

Thanks for the link Andy, but i ended up going with the Autometer "Z" series. Black..white letters...red needled. As close to "stock looking as i will find.
Having stared at "gauges" for periods longer than i care to remember, im particular in what i want. With a single glance at a needle you can pretty much tell the status of system with out really having to interpret a value.

Digital gauges get the "whiz" bang factor but watching digits scroll rapidly up and down in a single color makes them VERY hard to interpret.
The only way i woudl go digital is if i the numerical digits changed color as they approached a critical level. Green normal, yellow, caution, red warning.
A quick glance and seeing green your good to go. Seeing yellow out of the corner of the eye lets you know immediately something is wrong..you don't have to even "read" the number value displayed. Being bale to preset the "alarm" level would be a must as well.

I haven't found anything like that yet, unless i steal a spare one of these.

Look familiar Normy?

thanks.
Now ,where to put them?!?!?

Tony,
There are 3 distinct advantages to an electronic boost gauge.
1) It's easier to mount the actual gauge
2) You can get them with memory. Without this it'll take a passenger in the car to tell you the max boost you are making because you can't hve max boost and look at the gauge too. Usualy it'll take a few runs even with the passanger because as soon as you hit throttle they look up in fear.
3) They have a MAP sensor that MAY be compatable with other electronics.

If you remove your ashtray you can mount the ARM1 and 1 standard sized gauge in there. Another good place is the void between the door and the pod.

Tony,
I went w/the Defi D-Gauge for it's stock look and good quality. All Defi gauge use electric senders. I found good prices for them on ebay.
Here's a low-quality pic of my setup.

Yeah, but there's that funny brown color. I thought cockpits were gray-blue~

[I thought pretzel crumbs were stock too, until we found the audio panel!]

Y'all get 400's and I might even fit in there. Until they tell me to remove my earrings prior to flight......

Hey Jadz, how long did you have to wait until the clock struck 1928 hrs! what a coinky dink!

Normy, we did have 747s many moons ago , way before my time. apparently they used to do the Florida shuffle. ATl- JAX, PBI, MCO, often full 7 days a week.

I may go for digital boost with recall eventually, that could prove to be a handy trouble shooter.

Do they make a gauge with a "bug" on the bezel that gets pushed by the boost needle as it climbs then remains at the high point when the needle returns to zero? Thats all i would want.
