Question How many of you have been passengers in a 928?

How many times have you been a passenger in a 928? What were your impressions? Was it annoying to relinquish control?

I have been a passenger a total of two times in a 928 with six years of 928 ownership and exposer. Once when I let my wife drive just after buying Heidi. And once at the Spokane Raceway Park riding with Adam B. I don't make a very good passenger. I ask the question since every time my wife and I go somewhere in a 928, I drive, no exceptions! This fact bothers her a lot, so we end up going places in the Buick with her driving. I can't stand driving that car, much less being a passenger, since it has soft suspension and makes me kinda seasick. When we visit Idaho, the kids and her fly over and I drive, everyone is happy.

I can't recall ever riding shotgun in a 928.

I wonder what it's like.

Same here....riding with fellow PacNW 928ers....seems not to be a problem..but riding with the wife driving....well....like you said..not a good passenger. Hammer that invisible passenger side brake pedal all the time.

Heck..even rode in the back seat of Adams 928...on a 3 hour trip...other than the lack of head room..(I'm 6ft..and about 200lbs) it wasn't all that bad....

later,
Tom

Well on the track with Adam, all I had time to think about was staying in my seat, and not phantom braking on his amps or fuse panel.

With the wife, I just couldn't wait to get behind the wheel again, and was very apprehensive about her driving.

It's all a matter of how the nut behind the wheel is adjusted. I've spent many miles as a passenger - with Jane (his wife) driving.

Been a passenger a few times front and rear.

What was new to me last weekend was driving Rhonda's GT, alongside Rhonda driving my SE. Never heard my own car being driven before - sounded even better than when I am driving it.

I've ridden in the back seat of both Porsche's. Can't remember what the ride was like, I somewhat remember how I got there.

My wife is the worst for the passenger side pedal syndrome. She says she's bracing herself for a hard stop. I say "liar liar pants on fire." Some peoples kids, geez.

Anyhow, I have not, until this Saturday, ridden shotgun in any 928 since I have owned one. Scott Turnbull was more than gracious in offering me a very motivating ride in his track car "Der Yeti." I never knew how well those racing seats supported you. Gonna have to get a set for me!

On the way back from SITM 2003 a year ago somewhere about halfway between North Carolina and home (Kansas City area), my wife took the wheel for an hour or two (second time in five years that she drove the shark).

It really is odd being in the passenger seat.

Things I remember:
  • Being impressed by my wife's quick run well into triple digits and even more impressed by her willingness to do it for a sustained period of time.
  • Being that much more alert to where smokey might be up ahead (I don't think the wife has a very well tuned sensory perception when it comes to detecting threat and probability of unfortunate encounters).
  • It's actually rather nice being a passenger in the shark once you figure out how to relax.
  • I think I have a little more empathy with passengers now. Interesting how when you're driving fast and aggressively yourself and you're in control, everything seems safe and acceptable. The perception changes a bit when you're a passenger. Sometimes I don't think I'd especially like being my own passenger.

Pretty much every cool car I've owned I've let my dad take out for a spin, as his long-ago aquisition of an '80 Scirocco sparked my initial interest in sports cars...

Anyway he loved the 928 - would not stop talking about it after a 15 minute toodle around some long flat empty roads. He said it beat both my old RX-7s ('85 & '90) and my '84 Supra hands down for driving experience. Funny, he didn't mention the Civic...LOL... My mom was worried he'd go get one but he forgot about it and they went back to blowing my inheiritance on ultra-long vacations.

I felt pretty odd being the pasenger, especially when he put the hammer down. Nervous but happy that he was having fun!

Been a passenger in my old car ('85S) with my dad driving to Las Vegas the back way from Reno. Fun to let him run the risk of going to jail for awhile so I could relax a bit as we traveled at triple digit speeds for extended periods of time. Usually slowed down near towns as the local constabulary seems to position right near the town limits. One interesting thing that I never noticed while driving that fast is that at 140 indicated you can actually see the gas gauge move towards empty. At one point of that trip I watched it do so for awhile while discussing it with the old man. We came to the conclusion that at that drop rate we might not make Tonopah with the fuel onboard so he slowed down to 90ish. My Dad did comment that he thought these cars really come to life above 70 and he much prefers my car to his for this type of high speed work. For him to say that is HUGE!! He is a Caddy man through and through and finds it sacrilege to not buy American and yet he was impressed. Done the trip many times from Palm Springs to Vegas the back way with him in his El Dorado ETC and it is a great car as well. 300 +HP handles pretty good for a front drive. A bit numb at the higher speeds. Been airborn in that car many times with him blasting through the desert over the gnarly whoop de doos.

Regards,

Geoff

I've been a passenger in my own car. My only thoughts seemed to be...."c'mon, give it a little more gas!!!"

Passenger many times . My wife always drove her 79 I was the passenger even on trips to Vegas , Santa Barbara etc. .. Perhaps because I view driving on the street as a necessary evil and not particularly entertaining I am quite content to have her drive although not with out the occasional comment or two Never been in the back seat which should be no surprise !!

I find it to be a very interesting experiment. It's nice to see what it feels like to be a passenger. I've also tried sitting in the back, just for a bit, to see what it is like.

I don't really like being the passenger, but I have heard people say that if you want your wife or girlfriend to understand why you spend so much time and money on your car, you have to get her to love the car too. And the only way to do that, is to let her drive it...

What is interesting is riding as a 928 passenger in the left seat. That is really weird. Many of you will meet Jon and Rhonda Holdsworth from England at the OCIC. Great people the both of them. They just added a 91 GT for Rhonda and Jon still has the 928 SE.
