Oil pan drain plug insert
Looking for advice or thoughts in this one.
While winding down cooler line replacement, I noticed that the outer plug threads for the drain plug were separated from the pan. This prohibited the plug going back in.
Probably one rotation worth of threads, but with investigation it’s definitely an insert.
I ended up pulling the insert out, and that’s where things are right now.
Worf said he has seen this before. I’ve never heard of this.
Is this a factory thing?
And, what fixes exist?
The hole is 21mm without the insert.
Has anyone sourced inserts or self threading fill plugs. It’s a 86.5 BTW.

Some options for you:
24mm oil pan plug:
24mm taps (I think you'd only need the taper, not the whole set): https://www.mcmaster.com/products/ta...read-size~m24/
ETA: If it really is 21 mm, you can probably go with 22mm versions of the kinds of things I linked above, given some of the clearances that might exist for the flange of an oil pan plug.
ETA2: Maybe a better option for lower overall cost -
Good luck

I have not seen this on a 928 before. I am assuming that it leaked. Maybe they make a timesert that size (M20 x 1.5?) (Yes they do but you dont want to know the price).Or remove the pan and have a bung/ sleeve welded in. Or replace the pan. I know, not much help these are, but they are options. Hopfully someone with real experience will chime in..

I have ordered the Amazon kit, thank you.
I guess I need to make sure I don’t leave any shavings behind.

I will be disappointed if that insert is factory.
The PO kept good records (unlike me) and there is no mention of aftermarket work, but who knows.
I do have another pan here. I can replace if needed. I could also be all I can be and install the spacer that’s been sitting here for ten years.

put heavy grease on your tap so it catches the swarf.
I fixed one pan with this kit,
it works just cut off the threads you dont use after you have inserted it
part number 3523-22.00k
made in Belgium

Just a follow up.
The 22mm 1.5 tap worked well but then would not hold torque on the plug.
I ended up using a 22mm, EZ valve and used JB weld on the threads.
While permanent, it matches the oil cooler line to block fittings, which are also JB welded from a previous “mishap”.
