Default The "Sterling"

Just returned from seeing the most incredible example of 928 elegance ever. I had the privilege of sitting with my old army buddy Sterling from DFW, and discussing and viewing The "Sterling".

All questions answered.
All issues solved.
All ticks tacked.

Everything everyone could and should have thought of to update a 928 has been taken care of in this wonderful car. Stuttgart could(and maybe should) call him and borrow it for a few weeks. Install a few air bags and a modern entertainment system and just start building it again. Exactly the way it shows right now. Oh - they may have to do a few tweaks to the emission, but I'm betting it would take very little to get it suitable for any Porsche aficionado today.

I could have eaten my omelette off the top of the engine. Vacuum routing - check, crankcase venting - check, velocity stack height above injector - check. Timing map adjustments - check, alternator power - check. I was blown away with the detail and efficiency of design and implementation. A long term project that pays off with the best updated 928 ever. Masterful work, I hope to ride in it some day.

He still has break-in oil so best to wait a bit on burnouts.

I'm semi-serious about being able to market this 928 today. Look at what Ford, Chev, and Dodge have done with their refreshed muscle cars of the 70s/80s. Literally billions of $$$ to be made by mfg catering to us boomers nostalgia, and having a checkbook that can afford a McLaren, MB, or BMW M series. Development cost for a new coupe is multi-millions of bucks. This would be a fairly easy update. I think Porsche is afraid of taking money from the SUV buyers, and some Panamera types. Make it edgy, make it visceral. Put a third pedal in, keep the nannies to a minimum. Aero mirrors, Rake the windscreen a few deg, Maybe flair the fender wells, or use GTS rear fenders. I'd buy a new one.

It does have airbags, and an infotainment center with backup camera, and some cool features via the ECU, like gauge sweep on startup, & airbox mockup pieces are being printed as we speak.

Beautiful work, Sterling. Very tastefully done too! I sort of identify as a purist (I think), and I have no detectable quarrels with this. ITBs look fantastic & just like they belong there, as does everything else.

Doc, I think the market has said that no one (besides us true enthusiasts) desire a 3rd pedal anymore. I don't think Dodge even offers one at all now. Also, I doubt if the big 3 even bring back anything from the 80s beyond the 5.0 badge.

This car is truly awesome! I wish Porsche, or anyone for that matter, did put out such a product today.

Nice job Sterling - I've been pulling for you since the vario-cam days.

The color is beautiful and unique - it seems to be self-powered and glows all by itself.

I hope you can drive and enjoy it in good health!

Wasn't meant as a 'dis' on the car, just that modern cars for US are req to have multiple airbags for certain vehicles. And, while the entertainment system is obviously updated, it would need to be integrated with a lot of the Porsche specific CAN bus, or other electronic management in the whole car.

We should go into the "Sterling" business, and buy up cars and give it the treatment, then sell them on BaT. I'd do the financing. Now we need a young, ambitious worker to build them. I could see 20 "Sterling" cars per year. 450-500HP, 6 sp, updated electronics and a refresh paint and int. Wonder what they would sell for? Like the Singer of 911s.

I have to agree with you...

Sterling has built a 928 that not only exceeds expectations. It exceeds what most of us can IMAGINE!

I have owned a lot of 928's, and driven many more. This car blows them all into the weeds.

Sterling has not given me permission to share the photos of this cars development. But it has been an honor to share in it's development and in all honesty - Sterling's genius.

Hopefully this thread will fully develop and we will all learn even more!

Thank's for sharing!
