Default Purpose of sensor?

In the duct that takes air to the alternator, there is a probe that looks like a temperature sensor, presumably measuring ambient air? Where is the
temperature reading sent?

Correct part number 928 659 021 01 ....outer sensor for automatic air conditioning . Which is NO LONGER MADE , no longer available from Porsche and without which the climate control can not function correctly when the temperature control is any where but full hot , full cold . That 's the one !

That indeed would be the one - and that's the story ....
Jim, all sorts of Audis, BMW, etc have ambient temp sensors, although I don't know what they use for a climate control reference temp. Do you, or anyone know of the type and characteristics of this NLA (RTD?)sensor or where to find the specs. I would think that adaptable sensors could be sourced if the characteristics were known - or is this a long dead end topic?

Smart a$$ reply ........... be too hot or too cold . What needs to happen is reverse engineer a replacement temperature sensor ....variable resistance based temperature unit to feed the correct signals to the A/C control head . Until then source good used units although I believe we may have one new unit left in stock .

It's a thermistor, right? With the original and a bit of test equipment the spec could probably be deduced, if not available outright. Shouldn't be rocket science finding an appropriate replacement. Worst case, inside & outside thermistors are run through a comparator and you might have to replace both.

Taking Ed's numbers this one would seem to work:

Yup, as long as the curve sorta matches, Chris has the answer. It's a simple commonly available part (I'm sure Mouser stocks the same thing if Digikey runs low).

Just have to coat it and attach to the housing.

Resurrecting this old thread to enquire if anyone has found a suitable replacement for the temperature sensor in the alternator ducting.

I got one on eBay...was in great working order and also purchased all new ducting from a place online that sold airplane air duct...nice heavy duty vinyl with wire wound through it. Has held up extremely well.

FYI, I'm pretty sure the Porsche part is available again. Stupid expensive. But available.

Was certainly available new from Porsche a year ago as I bought one. Didn't realise that there was an alternative.
