My 1994 GTS automatic has a intermittent starting problem. I replaced the starting switch but did not fix the problem, what a bummer to replace. I believe it could be a switch that is activated when the shift lever is in PARK position
If so where is this switch located?
Can you please describe exactly what is happening.
EG what are you doing VS what is happening when you do it?
IE does the engine not crank when you turn the key,
Does it crank but wont start?
Will it crank when the shifter is in another selection,
What was the last thing that you fixed,
How many miles on the car.
Have you tried using the #14 pin connector touched to the hot post to crank the engine?
Has the starter relay been replaced?
How about the X bus relay?
Has the car been started with a weak battery?
Have you used a battery booster to start the engine?
Try moving the shifter to neutral instead of park and attempt to start it. Sometimes the interlock switch doesn't work in one position but works in another.
NOTE with the GTS it has a different ignition locking system that also locks the shifter,
its a cable operated affair,
and from what I have seen if you move too fast on key removal,
this can damage the parts of the system making it difficult to turn the key to the off position and or cause it to bind in its operation
You must go slowly and deliberately to insert and turn and remove the key, this also may affect the shifter locking system
I think Stan is referring to part #37 (shift lockout cable, 928 426 013 00), which is GTS only. Didn't know this existed, I don't have the faintest idea where the anterior end goes but it looks like the switch mounts on the shifter frame.
I was working Garys GTS and found this cable device is a shifter lockout,
so once the key is removed then the shifter is also locked into position.
Thats why its more difficult to turn the GTS ignition switch as your also working a cable,
and its easy to damage the lock cylinder cable system by rushing key operation.
NOTE this is for automatic transmission shifter locking system
Thank you gentlemen for your reply,. In moving the shift lever in and out of P N positions it shows up to be intermittently! So the culprit is the AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION GEAR POSITION SENSOR P/N 000 545 660 6
I should receive the part in 4-5 weeks from GER. I made a wrong assumption that it has to be the key switch The car has 41000 miles on it.
Note this part goes on the side of the transmission.
The F104 control lever works just fine! One has to push in the black button in the middle of the control lever ( rocket fire switch) in order to move . I modified the control unit to function in all positions.
The unit has been working for 20 years!
Before you replace the switch on the trans restore the system to stock configuration.
its not likely that the transmission switch has failed.
AND its more likely that the joystick option is interfering with the shifter .
OR have a test performed as the shifter cable may need to be adjusted,
and the drive line may also need new transmission mounts ,
This could be be part of the problem.
