kickdown etc. in A/T
I was convinced my kickdown switch was not working so I ordered a new one ($40) and went to put it in. I replaced it, but noticed it still wasn't even being pushed by the pedal assembly. It makes a "click" when pushed, so I adjusted the link behind the pedal, and also took up a whole bunch of slack in the throttle cable at the big adjuster on the engine side of the firewall. Voila! Kickdown works like it should, and the pedal feels much better. Feels lighter. I might not have been getting WOT also with 3/4" of slack. Probably didn't need a new switch.
In an automatic, all this stuff is very important.
BTW, every time I work on the car and see some small parts for the first time, I'm impressed with the quality and attention to detail even in the smallest parts of the 928.

Not sure why it happens, but it seems that a lot of kickdown switche eventually get to the point that they aren't engaged when the pedal is to the floor. I adjusted mine and got it working perfectly. It's about a 10 minute job.
Glad you fixed yours!

Can you guys outline how to fix this. My kickdown/wot is not recieving signal from the pedal either. Also, i cant hear it when i pull the linkage. Maybe time for a new switch?
Thanks

Pull the wires off the switch, short them together with ign on, you should hear the relay fire up the back in the box (in 3 speeds you can anyway). The box will not kickdown on the switch alone, if the throttle pressure cable is too slack, so you may need to adjust it up if this is the case. Its sensitive, so dont rush it. If too tight, it will change up very late, or only with complete removal of throttle - BTDT.

I think my question is related, sorry if you think otherwise. The throttle pedal in my '90 S4 is very stiff. You've really got to stand on it to get full throttle.
I had the pedal and all cables adjusted more than once with no improvement. - its been like this since I bought the car some 18 months and 36000kms ago.
Any ideas?

Johan,
Sounds like you have a binding issue. Lube everything visible. Pull the kickdown cable and shoot about half a can of motorcycle cable lube down it.
Beyond that, I'd have to look at your car. Perhaps the cables are TOO tight.
Before buying a new KD switch, one might want to verify that it's shot first (cuz' they seldom go bad). Buy a cheapo (~10 US$) VOM meter. Spend half an hour and learn how to use it. It is really a neccesity if you own a 928 and don't want to **** away cash. You can also check the KD switch by pulling the leads off it and then Ohming it out. Infinite Ohms not pressed, ~0 Ohms pressed.

hey, just a follow-up. More drive time and the 928 is finally downshifting like I hoped it would. I can't believe I didn't look into this before and at least investigate. Moon reminded me that the dynamic kickdown from the GTS is a possible retrofit. Maybe later.
