Default SCCA Laguna Seca 928 race results (short)

Had a pretty action filled weeked of racing with SCCA and the Double regional event at Laguna Seca. Ran 1:41.4 (again) and 2 second place finishes against my nemisis David Smith in his M3 euro 3.2 McGee motorsports racer. we ran our fastest times with a full fuel load ,and then it was 15 laps of brutal traffic!!! 47cars, 20 in class ITE, and the rest mazdas. and there were mazdas scattered everywhere!! Now I know what the ALMS Prototypes feel like with 10second a lap closure rates!
Too much fun!

scot Graham in the Weisach 82 ran consistent 1:49s and a best of 1:48. (good for him)
Had the pole both days, both days, David smith, dived bombed me and I couldn’t keep him off. hes got about 300+lbs under me. ) Got him back on Sundays race in traffic on the inside of my favorite turn 10!! He put two wheels off 11 trying to get me back and then I had a 5 second lead going down to turn2. 4 laps later in traffic, he was on my tail again, and I was ok, then, one critical bad decision to put some hurt on him and make a 3 car pass into the corkscrew, and I got hosed , almost dented a fender, and David got by me with 2 laps to go!!!!! Oh well, he was 1:41.2 for the ITE record and he was certainly faster. Guess the car, tires , or me are tired! One of the three!!

Had a great time, and drove the car home again!!! The guys with the big semis and truck trailers, with pit crews got a real kick out of the ole Holbert car driving home with the stereo on!

Great racing, lots of fun had by all, and the car is still running strong.

Speed GT World Challenge next month with Mark Anderson?????
need some more HP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MK

Oh yeah, in qualifying, hit the alligator birms on turn 4 on my first open hot lap and car died after 2 laps, one 1:42.xx good enough for the pole again. David broke a Diff mount and did 4 laps and a 1:43. WE BOTH thought we were done. My computer (fuel injector) connector came loose and chased that down for about an hour!. (" ok, got spark, so computer is good. Pump can be shorted and runs, relay good, fuel presure in lines, under pressure. Duhhh"

Mark,

Congratulations on the run! The greatest part about reading about your races (besides your performance) is that you drive your 928 to and from the track. That really says it all about these cars.

Keep up the good work. You make all of us 928 owners proud.

Thanks All!,

I just get a kick out of bringing the 928 out to the track, after almost 3 seasons now, never have really turned a bolt to fix anything. Its just drive it to the track, race it, and drive it home. what other cars can you do that with. (the nice thing, is all the little problems we all have with "magic blower syndrome, etc are not an issue cause all that stuff is GONE)

you should see how easy it is to do a timing belt with a lot of the stuff down there!

Also pretty funny, are the looks driving home. (even the double takes from the highway patrol!)
The other great thing, Is i get home fastest. harder to pack the car up, but im going 75mph all the way home and just pull it into the garage and unpack. no trailers to mess with!!

Way to go MK! Sounds like you had a great battle, which is the best kind of racing.

I took your advice on the tire pressures, 30lbs cold, and although it felt wierd at first, I could not manage to overheat them at Portland last weekend. They held on quite well. I had nobody with me to do temps, but based on my times there was indeed improvement (got to a 1:26.3 from last years 1:27.5)- from three things:
a) removed all of my inner bumpers finally, and a few more bits all adding up to around 85lbs of stuff, more to go soon.
b) front spitter, which I added this year has really improved the ability to track and front-end hookup. I can now attack the high-speed corners.
c) tire pressure to 30lbs cold. You are right - I'm now convinced!

Thanks again DK!!

Glad the pressures worked well. We have experimented with the hoosiers for 7 years now and all different sizes and performance cars, and that seem to be the number that works. sometimes if the temps dictate, we can go up or down on the pressure about 2psi.

glad you had a good time and your lap times went down 1 second and the tires were kept under you! 1:26 is a great time there, from what i have seen by others ive raced against. Including our own DH!!

Keep it going, and good luck with the other races and the stroker!

Let me know if you want your rear tires back now that you broke the hoosier tire pressure code. I sell'em back to you for what i had to give the tire guy for them (can you say, $30). You got to love my tire budget!

Take care,

Mark
